4×4 Mechanic, Servicing & Repairs

Most 4×4 problems show up gradually. Power tapers off on hills, the front end starts wandering, or a clunk appears when you take up drive. Corrugations, dust and water crossings work on a 4WD in ways a suburban commute never does. Willys services and repairs 4WDs at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast, from logbook servicing and diagnostics through to suspension, driveline and diesel work.

4WD & 4×4 Mechanics: Straight Answers

Servicing and repairs for 4WDs and touring rigs that work hard: utes, wagons and trucks. Workshops at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast. Rated 4.9 at Oxley and 4.8 at Warana across 280 Google reviews and backed by 20+ years working on diesels.

What we handle

  • Servicing built for 4WDs. Logbook servicing plus the checks that matter after dirt, dust, corrugations and water crossings.
  • Driveline and diffs. Gearboxes, transfer cases, diffs, CVs and wheel bearings.
  • Suspension. Worn shocks and bushes sorted, and upgrade options for touring and towing.
  • Diesel know-how. DPF, EGR and AdBlue faults, injectors, turbos and custom tuning for the common platforms.

How quoting works

We quote before we work, not after. Tell us the vehicle and what is going on, we inspect it, and you get a firm itemised quote and timeframe before anything starts. Anything extra found along the way gets your approval first. Heading off on a big trip? Ask us about a pre-trip check.

A 4WD carries loads a road car never sees: a bull bar and winch out front, a canopy and drawers behind, and a van on the towbar. That changes ride height, brake loads and how fast the front bushes and ball joints wear. Add diesel work, DPF and EGR faults, injectors and turbos, and transfer cases and hubs that a car workshop rarely opens. Ask what your mechanic sees most weeks before you book.

A 4WD service covers the same items as any logbook service, plus the parts that dirt, water and load actually punish. Tell us where the vehicle has been and what it tows, because that changes what gets looked at closely. Here is what we check:

Willys workshop Brand Icon

Engine & Fuel System Check

We inspect the engine, injectors and filters, looking for a fuel filter near the end of its life, water sitting in the trap and weeping fuel lines.

Willys workshop Brand Icon

Suspension & Drivetrain Health

Shocks get checked for oil leaks, bushes and ball joints for play, CV boots for splits, diffs and gearbox for weeps, wheel bearings for movement.

4WD System & Transfer Case

We shift through high and low range and check the hubs engage and release. Diff and transfer case oils are checked for level and the milky look of water getting in.

Cooling & Radiator System Check

The radiator and cooling system are inspected, including a look for mud packed into the radiator and intercooler fins, which is a common find after wet tracks.

Want more pulling power?

If your 4WD is flat when loaded or towing, a 4×4 diesel tuning service reworks the fuel, timing and boost maps. Available at both workshops.

Most 4WD faults give you warning before they strand you. A noise, a smell, a change in how it steers or pulls. If any of these show up, book it in rather than waiting for the next service interval:

Lagging engine or lack of power

Flat off idle, slow to build boost, or fading on a long hill. Common causes are a blocked air or fuel filter, a clogged DPF, a boost leak, or worn injectors.

Willys workshop Brand Icon

Odd noises

A clunk taking up drive points at uni joints or diff backlash. A whine that rises with speed is usually a wheel bearing. Grinding on full lock points at a CV.

Willys workshop Brand Icon

Poor handling

Wandering on the highway, a shudder through the wheel under brakes, or uneven tyre wear. Worn bushes, tired shocks and a loose front end all feel like this.

Willys workshop Brand Icon

Excessive smoke or poor fuel economy

Black smoke under load means too much fuel or not enough air, so we check the air filter, boost pipes and injectors. Blue smoke is oil. White smoke when warm can be coolant.

Why Willy’s Workshop?

Willys started as a diesel workshop and that is still where the depth is: injectors, injection pumps, turbos, DPF and EGR faults, and tuning. The 4×4 work grew out of it, because most of what comes through the door is a diesel ute or wagon that tows, tours or works.

So you get the diesel diagnostics on the same visit as the brakes, the bearings and the roadworthy. Both workshops handle 4×4 fitment as well, bull bars, snorkels, towbars, suspension lifts and leaf springs, so an upgrade and a service can be booked together.

Specialised 4×4 care

A bull bar, winch, canopy and drawers add weight the springs and brakes were not set up for. We check ride height, brake condition and suspension against how the vehicle is actually loaded.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will servicing my 4×4 affect my warranty?
Not at all! We follow manufacturer guidelines and use genuine parts to maintain your warranty while saving you from pricey dealer services.
How often should I get my 4×4 serviced?
Regular servicing is recommended every 10,000 to 15,000 km or every 6 months. If you’re hitting rough terrain often, more frequent checks are advised to keep your 4×4 in peak condition.
Can you service my 4×4 if it’s heavily modified?
Definitely! We have experience with all types of 4×4 builds, from standard setups to fully modified ones. We’ll make sure everything’s up to scratch.
How long does a 4×4 service take?
The duration of your 4×4 service depends on the type of service and the condition of your vehicle. A standard service usually takes a few hours, but for more complex work, such as engine checks or suspension tuning, it could take a full day. We’ll always let you know an estimated time frame when you book your service so you can plan accordingly.
