Diesel Engine Control Module Repair

Diesel ECU & ECM Repair

No-start? Faults that come and go? Water in the module, or a unit that won’t even talk to the scanner? We diagnose, repair and reprogram faulty diesel engine control units at our Oxley and Warana workshops. The idea is to bring a dead or flaky ECU back to life instead of bolting a new one on and hoping. This is module repair, not tuning.

The engine control unit (ECU), or engine control module (ECM) if you want the other name for it, is the computer that runs your diesel. It reads every sensor, fires the injectors, manages the turbo, EGR and glow plugs, and makes the call on fuelling and timing thousands of times a second. When something inside it lets go, the symptoms can point you all over the place. A hard no-start one day, random stalling the next, an injector or sensor code that just won’t clear, or a vehicle that won’t talk to the scan tool at all. We work on the module itself and fix the actual fault, rather than swapping a good part because someone had a hunch.

Now, this is a repair service. It is not a remap. ECU and ECM repair means getting a faulty engine control module working again the way the factory built it to. That’s a completely different job to remapping or tuning, which changes the calibration on a healthy module for power or economy. Dead, corroded or playing up? You’re on the right page. If your module is sound and you’re chasing more grunt or better towing response, head to our ECU remapping service instead.

Every job starts on the scanner and the bench. We make sure the ECU is genuinely the problem before we crack it open, because you’d be surprised how many “dead ECUs” turn out to be a chafed loom wire, a corroded earth, a tired relay or a sensor supply that’s dropped out. Once we’ve confirmed the module itself has failed, we fix the internal fault, reseal it against moisture, then bench test it, refit it and re-code it to your vehicle so it runs right and the immobiliser stays happy. You’ll get a straight answer after the diagnostic check, before anyone touches a soldering iron.

What We Repair

ECU & ECM fault diagnosis

No-Start & Dead ECU
Get it running again
No-comms, no-crank and no-start faults tracked back to a failed module, then repaired and re-coded properly instead of guessed at.
Water & Corrosion Repair
Reverse moisture damage
Water and corrosion inside the ECU cleaned out, repaired and resealed so the same fault doesn’t come straight back on you.
Intermittent & Comms Faults
Find the real cause
Random stalling, dropouts and CAN comms faults diagnosed properly before any module gets opened or swapped out.
Coding & Reflashing
Match the module to the vehicle
Repaired or replacement ECUs re-coded, reflashed and immobiliser-matched so the engine fires up and the security side is right.
Repair, Not Replace

Why choose Willy’s for ECU repair

Diagnosis Before Repair

We prove the ECU is actually the fault before we touch it. Looms, earths, relays and sensor supplies get ruled out first.

  • No-start, no-comms & intermittent faults traced
  • Wiring, earth & power-supply checks first
  • Scan and bench testing, not guesswork

Module Repair & Reseal

Blown internal drivers, water ingress, corrosion. We repair and reseal the lot so a sound module goes back in your truck.

  • Water-damaged & corroded ECUs recovered
  • Failed injector & output drivers repaired
  • Resealed against moisture and vibration

Coding, Not Tuning

Once a module’s repaired or replaced we re-code it and immobiliser-match it to your vehicle. Power and economy work is a separate job.

  • ECU re-coded & reflashed after repair
  • Immobiliser & security correctly matched
  • Remapping & tuning handled separately

Common ECU Failures We Repair

Signs your ECU or ECM has a fault

Seeing any of these? Get it on the diagnostic before a new module gets thrown at the wrong problem.

  • Engine cranks but won’t start, or won’t crank at all
  • Vehicle won’t communicate with the scan tool
  • Random stalling or cutting out while driving
  • Intermittent faults that come and go with heat or vibration
  • Water ingress, corrosion or a damp ECU connector
  • Injector, sensor or relay codes that won’t clear
  • Multiple unrelated fault codes at once
  • No injector pulse or no fuelling on a healthy engine

The Difference

Repair, replace or reprogram

Repair the module
When the fault is internal and recoverable, we repair and reseal your original ECU and keep your data
Replace when needed
If a module’s truly cactus, we source the correct replacement and code it to your vehicle
Reprogram & reflash
Corrupt or failed software reflashed back to the correct factory calibration for your engine
Bench testing
Every repaired module gets verified on the bench before it goes anywhere near your loom

FAQ

Diesel ECU & ECM repair FAQs

What is the difference between ECU repair and ECU remapping?
Repair fixes a faulty module so it runs the way the factory intended. Remapping is different, it changes the calibration on a healthy module for more power or economy. Two separate jobs. Dead or unreliable ECU means you want repair. If it’s fine and you’re after performance, that’s our ECU remapping service.
Can you repair my ECU instead of replacing it?
A lot of the time, yes. Once we’ve confirmed the module itself is the fault, blown internal drivers, water damage and corrosion can usually be repaired and resealed on your original unit. That keeps your existing coding and usually costs less than a coded replacement. And if it’s genuinely beyond saving, we’ll tell you straight.
My diesel won’t start. Is it definitely the ECU?
Not always, no. Plenty of no-start and no-comms faults turn out to be wiring, earths, relays or a sensor supply rather than the module itself. We diagnose properly before opening or swapping anything, so you’re not paying to fit a new ECU the car never needed in the first place.
Can a water-damaged ECU be saved?
More often than you’d think. Water and corrosion are about the most common diesel ECU failures we see. As long as the damage hasn’t cooked the board, we clean it up, repair it and reseal it against moisture so the fault stays gone. We assess it first and give you a firm position before any work goes ahead.
Do you have to re-code the ECU after repair?
A repaired original module usually hangs onto its coding. A replacement unit has to be coded and immobiliser-matched to your vehicle or it simply won’t start. Either way, after any repair we re-check the coding, reflash where it’s needed and confirm the engine runs and the security is right before it leaves us.
What causes intermittent ECU faults?
Usually heat, vibration or moisture working away at a tired solder joint, a connector or an internal driver. The fault comes and goes, which is exactly what makes it a pig to pin down. We load the module up on the bench so we can catch a fault that only shows its face when things warm up or start shaking.
Can you reflash or reprogram a corrupt ECU?
Yep. Where the hardware’s still good but the software has failed or gone corrupt, we reflash the module back to the correct factory calibration for your engine. That gets it running normally again without touching the tune. Chasing a performance calibration is our separate remapping service.
How long does an ECU repair take?
Depends on the fault, and whether we need parts or a coded replacement. A lot of repairs we turn around quickly. Sourcing and coding a replacement module takes a bit longer. You’ll get a realistic timeframe with your quote once we’ve done the diagnostic check.
Will an ECU repair affect my factory tune or warranty?
No. A repair puts your ECU back to correct factory operation and keeps your standard calibration exactly as it was. We don’t touch your tune as part of a repair. Any performance change is a deliberate, separate remapping job, and we’d talk it through with you first.
