Intercoolers: top mount or front mount
An intercooler cools the air after the turbo has compressed it. Cooler air is denser, which matters most when the engine is working hard under tow or has been tuned. Some vehicles are listed with both a top-mount and a front-mount kit.
A top-mount upgrade keeps the factory layout. A front-mount kit sits in the airflow ahead of the radiator and takes more fitting, with new piping and clearance to check behind the bar. The intercooler kits are listed by vehicle and mount position.
Cold air intakes and air boxes
On a standard diesel, a cold air intake on its own changes very little. It earns its place on an engine that has been tuned and is moving more air. The cold air intakes here include S&B and Banks kits for the Next Gen Ranger Raptor and the 6.7 Cummins, and there is a high-flow intake with an air box lid for the common-rail Patrol. Replacement air boxes are listed separately. Whichever you fit, keep the filter serviced, because a choked element costs more than any intake gains.
Snorkels and dust
A snorkel raises the intake point above most of the dust and spray thrown up on gravel and in convoy, so the filter lasts longer between cleans. On its own it does not make a vehicle safe for deep water. Know your vehicle's wading depth and check the seals along the intake path before a crossing. The snorkel parts range is small, so call us if your vehicle is not covered.
Clean air, clean fuel
Several kits pair a catch can with a fuel pre-filter, because the two are common protection for a common-rail diesel: one keeps oil mist out of the intake, the other catches water and dirt before the injection pump. If you only need the fuel side, the pre and post fuel filter kits are listed on their own.
Air intake FAQs
Will a bigger intercooler add power?
On its own, not much. It brings intake temperatures down, which protects a tuned or towing engine and stops it losing performance as it heats up. The power gain comes when the cooler is matched to a tune that uses the extra headroom.
What comes with the HPD 1HZ intercooler kit?
A top mount core of 280 x 300 x 76mm with HPD's CNC machined inlet adaptor welded onto the end tank, plus a 9in thermo fan. It is listed for the 105 Series LandCruiser at $1,630.00.
