Diesel & 4WD Clutch Specialists

Diesel Clutch Replacement & Repair

Clutch slipping under load, shuddering off the line, or the pedal gone soft? Could be a worn friction plate, a tired dual-mass flywheel, or a hydraulic fault. We replace and repair clutches on diesel utes, 4WDs, cars and trucks out of our Oxley and Warana workshops — matched to how you load it, whether that’s the daily commute or a caravan up the range.

A diesel clutch leads a hard life. Heavy right foot off the lights, towing a loaded van, big tyres, low-range crawling and stop-start traffic all heat the friction plate up and wear it down. When it starts slipping under load, juddering on take-off or the pedal goes light, the clutch is telling you it’s had enough. Our job is to work out exactly what’s worn and fit a clutch that holds up to how you actually drive.

Most jobs come down to a worn clutch kit — friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing — but it’s not always that simple. Dual-mass flywheels rattle and shudder when they wear, hydraulics (the master and slave cylinders) drop the pedal to the floor, and a tuned or heavily loaded rig often needs more clamp than the standard clutch can give. We check the lot before we quote so you’re fixing the real cause, not just throwing a kit at it.

Every clutch job starts with a proper diagnosis. We confirm whether it’s the clutch, the flywheel or the hydraulics, then give you a firm price before the gearbox comes out. If your diesel is tuned, tows heavy or runs big tyres, we’ll talk you through a heavy-duty or upgraded clutch that holds the extra torque without turning the pedal into a leg workout. Quality parts, done once, done right.

Know The Signs

Signs your clutch needs attention

Notice any of these? Get it looked at before a worn clutch chews the flywheel and turns a kit into a much bigger bill.

  • Clutch slips — revs climb but the speed doesn’t
  • Pedal feels spongy, low, or sticks to the floor
  • Shudder or judder pulling away from a stop
  • Hard to get into gear, or crunching on changes
  • Burning smell after a hill climb or a heavy tow
  • Rattle or chatter at idle (often the dual-mass flywheel)
  • Bite point right at the top of the pedal travel
  • Clutch drags — it creeps or won’t shift with the pedal down

FAQ

Clutch replacement FAQs

How do I know my clutch is on the way out?
The usual giveaways are slipping (the revs flare but the ute doesn’t pick up, especially under load or towing), a shudder pulling away, a high or spongy pedal, or a burning smell after a hill. Any of those and it’s worth getting it checked before the friction plate wears down into the flywheel and makes the job bigger.
Should I upgrade to a heavy-duty clutch?
If your diesel is tuned, runs big tyres or spends its life towing, then usually yes. A standard clutch is built for standard torque, and once you add power or load it’ll start slipping sooner. A heavy-duty kit gives more clamp to hold it, and we match it so the pedal stays civil rather than turning into a gym session.
What’s a dual-mass flywheel and do I need to replace it?
It’s a flywheel with springs built in to smooth out the diesel’s vibration. When it wears it rattles at idle, shudders, or knocks. If yours is worn we’ll replace it, or where it suits the build we can fit a solid flywheel conversion kit. We’ll tell you straight which is the better option for your vehicle.
My clutch pedal goes to the floor — is that the clutch?
Not always. A pedal that drops or feels spongy is often a hydraulic fault — a leaking master or slave cylinder — rather than the clutch itself. That’s a much smaller fix than a full clutch. We diagnose it properly so you’re not paying for a clutch when a cylinder would’ve done it.
How much does a clutch replacement cost?
Depends on the vehicle and whether you just need a standard kit or a heavy-duty upgrade, plus whether the flywheel or hydraulics need doing. That’s why we won’t quote blind. You get a firm price after we’ve confirmed what’s actually worn, so there are no surprises once the box is out.
How long does a clutch job take?
Most clutch replacements are a one to two day job depending on the vehicle — a 4WD with the gearbox and transfer case to drop takes longer than a simple front-driver. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe with the quote so you can plan around it.
Do you do clutches on tuned or big-tyre 4WDs?
That’s our bread and butter. We’re a diesel and 4WD shop, so we deal with remapped utes, big-tyre tourers and caravan tugs every week. We’ll fit a clutch with the right clamp for your power and load so it actually holds.
Can you just replace the friction plate?
We replace the clutch as a kit — friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing together — because they wear as a set and you don’t want to drop the gearbox twice. While it’s out we check the flywheel and hydraulics too, so the whole job is sorted in one hit.
Why use a diesel specialist for a clutch?
A general shop fits a standard kit and sends you on your way. We know how tuning, towing and big tyres load a diesel driveline, so we match the clutch to how you actually use the thing. That’s the difference between a clutch that lasts and one that’s back slipping in twelve months.
