Toyota LandCruiser Prado Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The LandCruiser Prado is one of the most common touring 4WDs on Queensland tracks, and at Willys Workshop we see them daily across both our Oxley and Warana sites. The platform spans several diesel generations: the 1KD-FTV 3.0-litre fitted to the 120 Series and early 150 Series, the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre that took over with the facelifted 150 Series from 2015, and the latest 250 Series (from 2024) running an updated 1GD-FTV 2.8 producing 150kW and 500Nm, paired to an eight-speed automatic and offered with Toyota’s 48V V-Active mild-hybrid assist. Each engine has its own character, its own weak points, and its own response to a properly developed tune.

These engines are built to tow and to cover distance — the 250 Series carries a 3500kg braked rating — but the factory calibration is set conservatively for global emissions targets, not for a fully loaded touring rig climbing the Range in 38-degree heat. Where Prados commonly come unstuck is the diesel particulate filter (DPF), which clogs on short-trip town driving and was the subject of a Federal Court class action against Toyota over earlier 2.8 models; the airbox dusting issue on 2.8 models that lets fine dust foul the airflow sensor and drop the engine into limp mode; EGR carbon build-up choking the intake; and on the older 1KD, injector and piston wear that needs to be caught early.

Our tuning is custom, developed in-house on the factory ECU and verified on the dyno — never a generic file flashed and sent on its way. We tune for how you actually use the vehicle, whether that’s towing a van up the Bruce Highway or running corrugations to Cape York, with a focus on usable low-down torque, cleaner throttle response and sensible exhaust gas temperatures under load.

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota Prado

Performance Tuning

Custom, dyno-verified tuning developed on the factory ECU for how you actually drive your Prado.

  • Custom in-house ECU calibration on the 1GD-FTV 2.8 and 1KD-FTV 3.0, developed and dyno-verified on our equipment — not an off-the-shelf file
  • Tuned for towing and touring: stronger, smoother low-down torque where it matters when loaded, with throttle response sharpened for stop-start and trail driving
  • EGT (exhaust gas temperature) monitoring built into the development process so the tune stays safe under sustained load on long climbs
  • Calibration matched to supporting modifications — intake, exhaust, intercooling and transmission behaviour — so the whole package works together rather than fighting itself

Servicing & Repair

Full diesel servicing and repair targeting the faults Prados are genuinely known for.

  • DPF diagnosis, forced regeneration and cleaning — the common failure point on town-driven 2.8 Prados — plus advice on driving patterns that keep it healthy
  • EGR system inspection and carbon decontamination of the intake manifold and valve to restore airflow on higher-kilometre engines
  • Airbox and airflow sensor checks to address the known dusting issue that throws 2.8 models into limp mode
  • Injector testing, turbo health checks and scheduled diesel servicing — critical for catching 1KD injector and piston wear before it becomes a major bill

FAQ

Toyota Prado diesel FAQs

Will tuning my Prado cause DPF or emissions problems?
No — our tuning is developed on the factory ECU with the emissions hardware intact and verified on the dyno. We’re acutely aware that the Prado DPF is a known weak point on town-driven 2.8 models, so our calibrations are written to work with the system, and we’ll always advise on the driving habits and servicing that keep a DPF healthy. If your DPF is already clogged we diagnose and address that as a repair, separately from any tune.
Which Prado engines do you tune and service?
We cover the full diesel range: the 1KD-FTV 3.0-litre in the 120 Series and early 150 Series, the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre from the facelifted 150 Series in 2015 onward, and the latest 250 Series 2.8, including variants fitted with Toyota’s 48V V-Active mild-hybrid system. Each generation gets a calibration developed specifically for that engine and ECU — we don’t share files across platforms.
Is a tune worth it if I mainly tow a caravan?
Towing is exactly where a properly developed Prado tune earns its keep. The factory calibration is conservative, and a custom in-house tune focuses on usable low-down torque and smoother response when the vehicle is loaded, which makes long climbs and overtaking less of a strain on the driveline. We monitor exhaust gas temperatures throughout development so the tune stays safe under the sustained load that towing puts on the engine.
Will tuning my Prado affect its DPF or emissions compliance, and is it legal in QLD?
We tune within a framework that keeps your emissions hardware intact. The factory DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and EGR system stay fitted and functional on road-registered vehicles, because removing or defeating emissions equipment on a registered vehicle is an offence under Queensland and federal law. Our focus is on optimising fuelling, boost and throttle response so the engine runs cleaner and more efficiently, which can actually reduce the soot loading that triggers frequent DPF regens. If you have a genuine DPF fault, we diagnose the root cause first rather than mask it. Talk to our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) team about a road-legal, emissions-compliant tune.
Which Prado engines and model years can Willy’s Workshop tune?
We cover the common-rail turbo-diesel Prados that make up the bulk of the Australian fleet. That includes the 1KD-FTV 3.0L found in 120 Series and early 150 Series models, and the 1GD-FTV 2.8L fitted to the 150 Series and the current 250 Series. The 250 Series can also be specced with Toyota’s 48V V-Active mild-hybrid assist. Bring your build date and variant and we’ll confirm exactly what’s available for your specific Prado before you book.
How long does a Prado tune take and how do I book at Oxley or Warana?
Most Prado tunes are completed within a day, depending on whether we’re carrying out diagnostics, a road tune, or dyno work as part of the job. We’ll give you a clear time estimate when you book so you can plan drop-off and pick-up. You can arrange a booking at either our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop.
