Land Rover Diesel

Land Rover Diesel Performance Tuning & Servicing

Land Rover’s diesel range covers some of the most capable touring and four-wheel-drive platforms on Australian roads — the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover families. At the heart of the current line-up is the 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six turbo-diesel, a mild-hybrid (MHEV) unit offered locally as the D200, D250 and D300. Earlier vehicles run the 2.0-litre SD4 four-cylinder Ingenium, while older Discovery and Range Rover models use the 3.0-litre SDV6/TDV6 and even the 4.4-litre SDV8. Each of these engines has its own character, its own emissions hardware and its own well-documented weak points.

At Willy’s Workshop we work on these vehicles every week across our Oxley (Brisbane) and Warana (Sunshine Coast) sites. They are premium European diesels with sophisticated electronics — AdBlue/SCR dosing, EGR, DPF regeneration and, on the six-cylinder cars, a mild-hybrid system. Treated correctly they are superb long-haul tow vehicles; neglected, they develop the same recurring faults again and again. Our approach is to understand the platform properly rather than throw parts at it.

Whether you want a smoother, more responsive Defender for towing the van up the Bruce Highway, or you simply want a Discovery or Range Rover serviced by people who actually know the Ingenium and SDV6 engines, we can help. Tuning is custom and dyno-verified, servicing is done to a genuine standard, and every job is explained before we start.

Engines We Tune

Land Rover diesel engines we tune

3.0L Ingenium I6 turbo-diesel (D200, MHEV)
147 kW
Entry six-cylinder mild-hybrid; smooth and economical, sensitive to correct oil and DPF health.
3.0L Ingenium I6 turbo-diesel (D250, MHEV)
183 kW
Mid-output six; strong, refined tow engine with the same EGR/AdBlue/DPF service needs.
3.0L Ingenium I6 turbo-diesel (D300, MHEV)
221 kW / 650 Nm
Flagship six-cylinder diesel; excellent torque, responds well to careful dyno tuning.
Older diesels: 2.0L SD4 I4, 3.0L SDV6/TDV6 & 4.4L SDV8
250kW / 700Nm
Pre-Ingenium-six units; prone to timing-chain wear, EGR clogging and DPF/oil-dilution faults.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Land Rover

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house diesel tuning developed on the dyno for your specific Land Rover — not a generic file flashed and forgotten.

  • Custom ECU calibration written in-house for the 3.0 Ingenium (D200/D250/D300) and earlier SDV6/SD4 engines, tailored to how you actually use the vehicle.
  • Dyno-verified before and after, so torque and power gains are measured and repeatable — particularly useful for towing response in the mid-range.
  • Sensible, durability-first mapping that respects the mild-hybrid system, turbo limits, EGTs and transmission tolerances rather than chasing headline numbers.
  • Tuning to suit supporting work — intakes, exhaust and cooling — with honest advice on what a given platform will and won’t safely accept.

Servicing & Repair

Full mechanical servicing and diagnostics for every Land Rover diesel, with the emissions and driveline knowledge these vehicles demand.

  • Logbook-standard servicing using correct-specification oils and filters — critical on Ingenium engines, where the right oil and intervals directly affect timing-chain and DPF health.
  • Diagnosis and repair of the common faults: EGR clogging, AdBlue/SCR dosing and ‘restricted performance’ messages, DPF blockage from short-trip driving, and timing-chain wear on the Ingenium units and timing-belt service on the older 3.0 TDV6.
  • Carbon cleaning, injector and turbo work, cooling-system repairs and driveline servicing across Defender, Discovery and Range Rover.
  • Full diagnostic scans and fault-finding using proper Land Rover-capable equipment, so warning lights are traced to a root cause instead of guessed at.

FAQ

Land Rover diesel FAQs

Is it worth tuning a Land Rover diesel, and what does it cost?
For most owners, yes — particularly if you tow or carry weight. A custom tune sharpens throttle response and lifts mid-range torque where these engines do their work. Cost depends on the engine and the supporting modifications, so we provide a firm quote after discussing your vehicle and goals. We don’t sell generic off-the-shelf files; everything is developed for your car on the dyno.
Will a tune or service affect my Land Rover warranty?
Factory warranty terms vary, and modifications can affect cover on related components, so it’s worth understanding your situation before proceeding. Manufacturers can’t void your entire warranty simply because the vehicle has been serviced elsewhere, and ordinary logbook servicing with correct parts protects your cover. We’re happy to talk through the implications honestly for your specific model and age.
Can you delete or modify my DPF, EGR or AdBlue/SCR system?
Emissions-control hardware is fitted for legal reasons and removing or defeating it on a road-registered vehicle isn’t something we do. What we can do is diagnose and properly repair these systems — cleaning or replacing a clogged EGR, fixing AdBlue/SCR dosing faults, and restoring healthy DPF regeneration. A correctly functioning emissions system is also better for long-term reliability.
What sort of gains can I expect from a Land Rover diesel tune?
It depends on the engine, the model year and any supporting work. The 3.0 Ingenium six responds well, especially in usable mid-range torque, while the older SDV6 and 2.0 SD4 have tighter safe limits. Rather than promise a fixed figure, we tune on the dyno and show you the measured before-and-after for your vehicle so you know exactly what you’ve gained.
Which Land Rover engines and years do you work on?
All of the common diesels: the current 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six (D200, D250, D300 mild-hybrid) in the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover; the 2.0-litre SD4 four-cylinder Ingenium; and the older 3.0-litre SDV6/TDV6 and 4.4-litre SDV8. If you’re unsure which engine your vehicle has, give us the build year and model and we’ll confirm.
How do I book, and how long will the work take?
Call or book online and let us know your model, year and what you’re after. A standard service is usually a same-day job; diagnostics and tuning often are too, though emissions-system repairs and bigger driveline work can need longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe up front. We’re at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast.
