Diesel & 4WD Transmission Specialists

Diesel Transmission Repairs & Rebuilds

Slipping, banging through the gears, or sitting in limp mode? Could be a tired torque converter, a valve body that’s sticking, or clutch packs that have had it. We diagnose, repair and rebuild automatic and manual transmissions for diesel utes, 4WDs, cars and trucks out of our Oxley and Warana workshops. The scanner goes on before anything comes apart, so you’re only paying to fix what’s actually wrong.

A diesel gearbox cops a flogging. Towing heavy, big tyres, long pulls up the range, then crawling through traffic on the way home. All of it loads the box up, cooks the fluid and wears the friction surfaces down. When it starts slipping between gears, banging the shifts, flaring off the line or dropping into limp mode, the box is telling you something. Our job is to work out exactly what, then fix it so it holds up to real towing and touring, not just a lap of the block.

Autos and manuals, we do both. On an auto the trouble is usually a worn torque converter, a valve body that’s sticking, dead solenoids, or clutch packs that have burnt out because the fluid got hot and stayed hot. Manuals are a different beast: clutch wear, synchros that crunch or baulk going into gear, tired bearings, dodgy selectors. One thing we see on heavily loaded tow rigs no matter the box is overheating, and the honest fix there is a proper cooler upgrade, not another flush that buys you a month.

Every job kicks off on the diagnostic scanner. We read the live data and the transmission temps, pull the stored codes, road test it if it’s safe to, and look at the state of the fluid before a single bolt comes out. That tells us whether you’re up for a valve body or solenoid job, a converter, or a full rebuild. No point stripping a gearbox that only needed a sensor sorted. Once the diagnostic’s done you get a firm price before we lift a spanner, plus a straight answer on whether a targeted repair or a rebuild is the better money.

Know The Signs

Signs your transmission needs attention

Notice any of these? Get it on the scanner before a small fault turns into a full rebuild.

  • Slipping or flaring, revs climbing but no go
  • Harsh, jerky or banging gear changes
  • Stuck in limp mode, or jammed in the one gear
  • Transmission or check-engine light on
  • Shudder on take-off, often the torque converter
  • It sits there before it grabs drive or reverse
  • Fluid that smells burnt, looks dark or runs low
  • Overheating on long climbs or under tow

FAQ

Transmission repair FAQs

My transmission is in limp mode. Is it always a rebuild?
No. Limp mode is just the box protecting itself, and more often than not it’s set off by a sensor, a solenoid or a valve body fault, not busted internals. We scan and road test first to find what’s really going on, so a control fault doesn’t get written up as a full rebuild it never needed.
Can you repair a torque converter without replacing the whole transmission?
A lot of the time, yeah. A converter that’s shuddering or worn, or a lock-up clutch playing up, can usually be dealt with on its own. We work out whether the converter is the actual fault or just a symptom of something bigger, then quote the repair that sorts it properly.
What does a valve body repair fix?
The valve body sends hydraulic pressure where it needs to go to make the gears change. When it sticks or wears out you’ll get harsh shifts, slipping, a delay, or the wrong gear altogether. We rebuild or replace it to get the shifting clean and correct again, then prove it on a road test.
Should I repair or rebuild my transmission?
Comes down to what’s worn. A single solenoid, the valve body or a converter is a targeted repair and costs you less. Once the clutch packs and gears are damaged though, a rebuild is the smarter long-term call. We lay out both options and give you the honest answer once we’ve had a proper look.
How much does a transmission rebuild cost?
Depends on the vehicle and how far gone it is, which is exactly why we won’t quote blind. A small solenoid or valve body job is a long way short of a full rebuild. You get a firm price after the diagnostic so you know where you stand before any work starts.
Do you work on manual transmissions too?
We do. Clutch replacement, synchros that crunch or baulk, worn bearings, selector and linkage faults: all part of the job on a manual box, same as we do the autos. Diesel utes, 4WDs, cars, trucks, whichever it is.
My transmission overheats when towing. Can you fix it?
Yep. Heat under a tow load cooks the fluid and takes years off the box. We check the fluid and the cooling, and where the factory cooler can’t keep up we fit a quality transmission cooler so it stays in a safe temp range with a load on the back.
How long will the repair take?
A diagnostic and a smaller job like a solenoid or a service is often same-day or next-day. A full rebuild’s a longer wait, since there’s parts and machining involved. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe with the quote so you can work around it.
Why use a diesel specialist instead of a transmission chain?
A chain’s default answer is usually a replacement unit. We’re a diesel and 4WD shop, so we know how towing, tuning and big tyres load up your driveline. We diagnose the real fault and repair or rebuild to suit how you actually drive the thing, instead of handing you a one-size-fits-all reco.
