Holden Diesel

Holden Diesel Performance Tuning & Repair

Holden’s diesel utes and wagons are Isuzu-derived under the skin, and that shared DNA is exactly why they respond so well to proper workshop attention. At Willy’s Workshop we look after the full Holden diesel range across our Oxley (Brisbane) and Warana (Sunshine Coast) sites: the RG Colorado and Trailblazer running the 2.8L Duramax (LWH), and the earlier RC Colorado and RA/RC Rodeo built around the 3.0L 4JJ1.

The 2.8L Duramax is a strong, torquey unit — 147kW and 500Nm in 10/2013-on automatic RG models (132kW/470Nm in the earlier build) — but the factory six-speed automatic (the GM 6L50 in particular) is well known for torque-converter shudder, and it relies on an EGR and DPF system that fills with carbon when the truck only sees short trips. The older 3.0L 4JJ1 is a proven Isuzu engine, yet it has its own habits, most notably oil consumption and EGR carbon build-up as the kilometres climb.

Whether you want sharper throttle response and safer towing torque from a dyno-verified tune, or you’re chasing down a shudder, a DPF light or rising oil use, our diesel technicians know these platforms intimately. Every job is done in-house on Holden-specific data — no generic off-the-shelf files.

Engines We Tune

Holden diesel engines we tune

2.8L Duramax LWH (RG Colorado / Trailblazer, 10/2013-on)
147 kW / 500 Nm
Strong, torquey Isuzu-derived four behind the factory six-speed auto (GM 6L50 known for torque-converter shudder); EGR/DPF carbon build-up on short-trip use. Earlier 2012-on build: 132 kW / 470 Nm.
3.0L 4JJ1 (RC Colorado / RA-RC Rodeo)
130kW / 430Nm
Proven Isuzu common-rail diesel; reliable but prone to oil consumption and EGR carbon build-up as kilometres climb. Outputs vary by variant and year — correct oil grade and service intervals are critical.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Holden

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning for the 2.8L Duramax and 3.0L 4JJ1 — written to your truck and proven on the dyno.

  • Custom-written tunes to the factory ECU — we calibrate fuel and boost for your exact Colorado, Trailblazer or Rodeo, never a generic file flashed blind.
  • Real, measured gains on the 2.8L Duramax: sharper throttle, stronger mid-range torque and more confident towing and overtaking, with every change validated on our in-house dyno.
  • Tuning that respects the factory automatic — we tune torque delivery sympathetically rather than spiking it into a transmission already prone to shudder.
  • Towing, touring and economy-focused calibrations for the 4JJ1 and Duramax, set up to keep EGTs sensible under load on long Queensland hauls.

Servicing & Repair

Diagnostics, servicing and driveline repair for every Holden diesel — Colorado, Trailblazer and Rodeo.

  • RG automatic diagnosis and repair — we identify torque-converter shudder, fluid degradation and valve-body faults and put a lasting fix in place, not a band-aid.
  • EGR and DPF servicing for both the Duramax and 4JJ1 — carbon cleaning, forced regeneration and resolving the soot build-up that causes warning lights and limp mode.
  • 4JJ1 oil-consumption investigation — PCV/breather checks, leak diagnosis and the correct oil grade and service interval to protect the turbo, injectors and timing components.
  • Logbook-style scheduled servicing, injector and turbo health checks, and full common-rail diesel diagnostics across the Holden range.

FAQ

Holden diesel FAQs

Is it worth tuning a Holden Colorado diesel, and what does it cost?
For most owners, yes — the 2.8L Duramax in particular wakes up noticeably with a properly written tune, gaining mid-range torque that makes towing and overtaking far less stressful. Cost depends on whether you want a straightforward power-and-economy calibration or a more involved package, so we provide a quote once we know your model, year and how you use the truck. Book it in or get a quote and we’ll talk you through the realistic outcome for your vehicle.
Will tuning or DPF/EGR work affect my factory warranty?
If your Holden is still within a manufacturer warranty period, any modification can potentially affect warranty on related components, so we’ll always discuss that with you first. Many of our Holden customers are out of factory warranty, where this is a non-issue. We’re upfront about the trade-offs so you can make an informed decision before any work starts.
Are DPF and EGR modifications legal in Australia?
Emissions hardware like the DPF and EGR is required for a road-registered vehicle in Australia, and removing or defeating it is not legal for road use. What we focus on is keeping that system working properly — carbon cleaning, forced regenerations, fixing the underlying cause of blockages and restoring correct function — so your Colorado, Trailblazer or Rodeo runs cleanly and stays compliant.
How much power will I actually gain?
Gains depend on the engine, its condition and how conservative the factory calibration is. The 2.8L Duramax responds well thanks to its turbo and common-rail setup, while the older 3.0L 4JJ1 makes more modest but worthwhile improvements. Rather than quote a headline number you may not see, we verify every result on our in-house dyno so the figures are real for your specific truck.
Which Holden engines and years do you tune and service?
We cover the full Holden diesel range: the RG Colorado and Trailblazer with the 2.8L Duramax (LWH), from the 2012-on 132kW build through the 10/2013-on 147kW/500Nm version, plus the earlier RC Colorado and RA/RC Rodeo running the 3.0L 4JJ1. If you’re unsure which engine your vehicle has, send us the build date and we’ll confirm.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
You can book at either our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop. A custom tune is typically a same-day job including dyno time, while servicing and most EGR/DPF work is also usually completed in a day. Driveline jobs such as an automatic transmission repair take longer and we’ll give you a clear timeframe with your quote.
