A trailer that plays up on the road costs you the day as well as the repair bill. Most of it shows up in the yard first: a hub hot to the touch after a run, or a soft brake pedal. Book it in.

A trailer service is mostly a wear check. We pull the hubs and look at the bearings and seals, measure brake lining and drum condition, check the springs, shackles and U bolts for play, and test every lamp and the plug at the front. What we find decides the job. Bearings and seals are cheap, a chewed spindle is not.

Trailer work is load work. Everything on it is sized for the weight you put over the axles, so the parts that fail are the ones carrying it: bearings, brake linings, spring eyes and shackle pins. Towing a loaded trailer also leans on the tow vehicle, which is where the diesel side matters. How to spot when your trailer’s due for a check-up

Trailers usually warn you before something lets go, but the signs are easy to miss when the trailer sits in the yard between jobs. Watch for these:

Uneven wear on tyres

Feathering across the tread points to alignment. Wear on one edge only usually means a bent axle or a tired spring pack.

Brakes feeling off

If your trailer’s brakes feel weak or unresponsive, it’s time for a check, safety’s key.

Strange noises or vibrations

Any odd rattling or shaking when towing could signal problems with the suspension or towing system.

Leaking fluids

Noticing spots of oil underneath your trailer? Don’t ignore them. It’s a sign your trailer needs some attention.

What’s covered in our trailer servicing?

Every trailer service here covers the same ground: brakes, suspension, electrics and the coupling. The wheels come off so the bearings, seals and brake lining can be seen properly, because none of that can be judged through a rim. You get told what is worn now and what will need doing next service. Here is what we check and service:

Brake & Air Brake Service

Drums come off so linings, shoes and wheel cylinders can be measured, not eyeballed. On air brake trailers we test the system for leaks and check slack adjuster travel and diaphragm condition.

Electrical & Fuel Systems Check

Most trailer electrical faults are earths and pins, not globes. We check the plug and socket for corrosion, the earth back to the chassis, and every lamp and indicator under load. The fuel system is checked at the same time for weeping lines and loose fittings.

Suspension & Steering Inspection

Springs, shackles, pins and bushes carry the load, so that is where the play shows. We check for cracked leaves, worn shackle pins and movement at the hangers, and check axle alignment.
