Mazda Diesel

Mazda Diesel Performance Tuning & Servicing

Mazda’s diesel range spans two very different engineering stories, and getting the most out of either takes a workshop that understands both. The earlier BT-50 (2011-2020) shared its 3.2-litre P5AT five-cylinder with the Ford Ranger, while the current third-generation BT-50 is built on Isuzu’s D-Max platform with the 3.0-litre 4JJ3 and 1.9-litre RZ4E four-cylinders. The CX-5 and CX-8 SUVs run Mazda’s own 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D. At Willy’s Workshop we tune and service every one of these from our Oxley (Brisbane) and Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshops.

Each of these platforms has its own personality. The P5AT 3.2 is torquey and durable but sensitive to EGR cooler and injector issues; the Isuzu-derived 4JJ3 and RZ4E are proven, efficient units that respond well to careful calibration; and the SkyActiv-D is a high-tech, low-compression diesel that rewards correct DPF and EGR maintenance. We build our work around the real-world traits of each engine rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Whether you want more usable torque for towing and touring, or simply a Mazda diesel that is serviced properly and stays reliable, our team delivers custom, dyno-verified results backed by genuine diesel and mechanical expertise.

Engines We Tune

Mazda diesel engines we tune

3.2L P5AT 5-cylinder turbo-diesel (BT-50 2011-2020)
147 kW / 470 Nm
Torquey, durable Ford-shared five-cylinder; watch EGR coolers, injectors and head gaskets.
3.0L 4JJ3 turbo-diesel (current BT-50)
140 kW / 450 Nm
Proven Isuzu D-Max-derived four-cylinder; strong, efficient and responds well to careful calibration.
1.9L RZ4E turbo-diesel (current BT-50)
110 kW / 350 Nm
Compact, economical Isuzu four; auto-only with reduced towing capacity, smooth on tour.

What will your Mazda make?

Pick your model to see typical gains from a Willys Workshop tune.

Indicative gains on a stock vehicle, measured on a dyno at the engine (crank) — wheel power reads lower (typically 15–20% on a 4WD). Actual results vary with vehicle condition, fuel quality and modifications.

FAQ

Mazda diesel FAQs

How much does a Mazda diesel tune cost, and is it worth it?
Pricing depends on your engine, the supporting modifications fitted and exactly what you want from the vehicle, so we provide a quote once we know your BT-50, CX-5 or CX-8 and its goals. The value comes from a custom, dyno-verified calibration that improves real-world torque and driveability for towing, touring and daily use — not a generic file. Get in touch and we’ll talk through what’s realistic for your Mazda.
Will tuning my Mazda affect the factory warranty?
Any modification can potentially affect a manufacturer’s position on warranty, particularly on a near-new vehicle, so it’s worth considering where your Mazda sits. We tune within sensible, mechanically sympathetic limits and can discuss the implications for your specific situation. Many owners tune outside the warranty period or accept the trade-off for the gains — we’ll give you straight advice before any work begins.
What about the DPF, EGR and AdBlue systems — is removing or modifying them legal?
In Australia it is illegal to remove or disable emissions equipment such as the DPF, EGR or SCR/AdBlue system on a road-registered vehicle. We keep these systems intact and instead focus on cleaning, correct diagnosis and tuning that works with them. On the SkyActiv-D CX-5 and CX-8 in particular, keeping the DPF and EGR healthy is central to long-term reliability.
What performance gains can I expect from my Mazda diesel?
Gains vary by engine, condition and any supporting upgrades, so we won’t quote a fixed figure sight-unseen. The P5AT 3.2, Isuzu 4JJ3 3.0 and SkyActiv-D 2.2 each respond differently to tuning. What we promise is a measured, dyno-verified improvement in usable power and torque, with documented before-and-after runs so you can see exactly what your Mazda gained.
Which Mazda diesel engines and years do you work on?
We cover the full Australian Mazda diesel range: the 2011-2020 BT-50 with the 3.2-litre P5AT five-cylinder (147kW/470Nm), the current Isuzu-based BT-50 with the 3.0-litre 4JJ3 (140kW/450Nm) and 1.9-litre RZ4E (110kW/350Nm), and the CX-5 and CX-8 with the 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D. If you’re unsure which engine you have, let us know your model and year.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
You can book either of our workshops — Oxley in Brisbane or Warana on the Sunshine Coast — by phone or through the website. A logbook service is typically a same-day job, while a custom dyno tune is usually scheduled as a dedicated booking so we have time to develop and verify the calibration properly. We’ll confirm timing when you book based on your engine and what’s involved.
