Ford Ranger Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The Ford Ranger is one of the most capable diesel utes on Australian roads, but each engine in the range has its own character and its own quirks. Across the PX to PX3 era the 3.2-litre P5AT five-cylinder and the earlier 2.2-litre four-cylinder did the heavy lifting, while the Next-Gen platform introduced the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo EcoBlue paired with a 10-speed automatic, and the 3.0-litre V6 Power Stroke that powers the diesel Wildtrak, Sport and Platinum. At Willy’s Workshop we work on all four diesel engines, and we treat each one according to its real platform traits rather than a one-size-fits-all flash.

Whether your Ranger is a daily-driven work truck, a towing rig, or a weekend tourer, the difference between a well-sorted vehicle and a problematic one usually comes down to how the engine, emissions hardware and driveline are maintained and calibrated. We specialise in custom, in-house diesel tuning written to your factory ECU and verified on the dyno, alongside the mechanical servicing and repair work that keeps high-kilometre Rangers reliable.

With workshops at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast, Willy’s Workshop covers South East Queensland with a premium diesel performance and mechanical service. Everything we do is tailored to your specific engine, build and intended use.

Engines We Tune

Ford Ranger diesel engines we tune

2.0L Bi-Turbo EcoBlue (10-speed)
157 kW / 500 Nm
Next-Gen four-cylinder paired with a 10-speed auto; responsive when tuned, but benefits from shift refinement and careful intake and emissions maintenance.
3.0L V6 Power Stroke
184 kW / 600 Nm
Next-Gen diesel V6 in the Wildtrak, Sport and Platinum; strong torque and towing capability, suited to drivability-focused calibration and disciplined servicing.
3.2L 5-cyl P5AT (PX-PX3)
147 kW / 470 Nm
The long-serving five-cylinder; known EGR cooler weak point, DPF regeneration issues on short trips, and 6-speed auto faults to watch.
2.2L 4-cyl
118 kW / 385 Nm
The earlier value four-cylinder; reliable when serviced correctly, with attention needed on DPF/EGR carbon and injection health at higher kilometres.

Your Ranger's tune potential

Pick your engine to see typical gains from a Willys Workshop tune.

Indicative gains on a stock vehicle, measured on a dyno at the engine (crank) — wheel power reads lower (typically 15–20% on a 4WD). Actual results vary with vehicle condition, fuel quality and modifications.

Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Ford Ranger

Performance Tuning

Custom Ford Ranger diesel tuning, written in-house to your factory ECU and verified on the dyno. We tune for drivability, towing response and fuel efficiency, not just headline numbers.

  • Custom ECU calibration for every diesel variant: 2.0 Bi-Turbo (10-speed), 3.0 V6 Power Stroke, 3.2 P5AT and 2.2, tuned to your build and not a generic off-the-shelf file.
  • Dyno-verified power and torque, with each tune individually data-logged and refined for clean fuelling, safe EGTs and reliable rail and boost control.
  • Throttle response and transmission shift refinement, smoothing out the lag and gear hunting that owners commonly report on the 10-speed and 6-speed autos.
  • Towing and touring calibrations focused on usable mid-range torque, cooler running and consistent power when loaded or climbing in the heat.

Servicing & Repair

Full mechanical servicing and repair for the Ford Ranger, with deep knowledge of the known weak points across the P5AT, EcoBlue and V6 diesel platforms.

  • Logbook and major servicing using correct-spec oils and filters, with diesel injection, fuel system and cooling system inspections built in.
  • EGR, DPF and intake carbon diagnosis and repair, including the EGR cooler failures the 3.2 P5AT is well known for and DPF regeneration faults on short-trip vehicles.
  • Driveline and transmission work, covering the 6-speed auto issues, transmission cooler and lead-frame faults, and clutch and gearbox repairs.
  • Injector, turbo, timing and head diagnostics, plus pre-purchase inspections so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit.

FAQ

Ford Ranger diesel FAQs

How much does a Ford Ranger tune cost and is it worth it?
Pricing depends on your engine, the level of tune and any supporting work your Ranger needs, so we provide a quote once we know your variant and goals. The value is in the result: a properly written, dyno-verified custom tune improves real-world drivability, throttle response and towing performance, and is tailored to how you actually use the truck. Get in touch with the details of your Ranger and we’ll give you an honest assessment.
Will tuning my Ranger void my factory warranty?
If your Ranger is still within the Ford warranty period, any modification to the factory ECU can affect warranty cover on related components, so it’s worth weighing that up before proceeding. We’re happy to talk through your situation, what is and isn’t affected, and the best approach for a vehicle still under warranty versus one that is out of warranty.
Can you delete or turn off the DPF, EGR or AdBlue system?
Emissions-control hardware such as the DPF, EGR and the AdBlue/SCR system fitted to Euro 6 and Next-Gen Rangers is required by law on vehicles used on public roads in Australia, and tampering with it carries real legal and roadworthy consequences. Our focus is on keeping these systems working correctly through proper diagnosis, cleaning and repair, and on tuning that works with the emissions hardware rather than removing it.
What power gains can I expect from a Ford Ranger tune?
Gains vary considerably between the 2.2, 3.2 P5AT, 2.0 Bi-Turbo and 3.0 V6, and they depend on your hardware and the headroom we can safely use. Rather than quote a number we can’t stand behind, every tune is developed on our dyno for your specific vehicle, with the priority being reliable, usable power and torque across the rev range. You’ll get a verified before-and-after, not a guess.
Which Ranger engines and years do you tune and service?
We cover the full Australian Ranger diesel range: the 2.2-litre four-cylinder and the 3.2-litre P5AT five-cylinder from the PX to PX3 generations, plus the Next-Gen 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo EcoBlue with the 10-speed auto and the 3.0-litre V6 Power Stroke in the diesel Wildtrak, Sport and Platinum. If you’re unsure exactly which engine and build you have, send us your details and we’ll confirm.
How do I book and how long does the work take?
You can book by contacting either of our workshops, Oxley in Brisbane or Warana on the Sunshine Coast. A standard service is usually a same-day job, while custom dyno tuning typically takes longer because of the data-logging and refinement involved, and diagnostic or repair work depends on what we find. We’ll give you a clear timeframe when you book so you can plan around it.
