Diesel tuning is our main line of work, and every tune starts the same way, because a tune cannot fix a mechanical fault. We scan for stored codes, look at boost, fuel pressure and exhaust gas temperature, and check the state of the turbo, intercooler piping and injectors. If something is worn or leaking, you hear about it before we touch the file.

Once the engine is healthy we log it under load, then adjust fuelling, boost and timing in steps, road testing between each change. What you gain depends on the engine, its condition, and any bolt on parts already fitted.

A diesel car tune changes how your engine delivers what it already has: when the turbo comes on, how much fuel goes in at each load point, and how the transmission behaves behind it. What that feels like from the driver’s seat depends on your engine and its condition. Here is what a tune usually improves:

Boost your power

More usable power through the mid range, where you actually drive. Throttle response sharpens because the tune matches fuelling to boost instead of waiting for it.

Pulling power you can count on

Towing loads the engine at low revs for long stretches. A towing tune builds torque earlier and holds fuelling steady on climbs, while we keep an eye on exhaust gas temperature so the engine is not cooked under load.

Save at the pump

More efficient fuel use means fewer trips to the servo and more cash left in your pocket over time.

Smoother drive

Flat spots off idle and hunting gear changes often come from a factory fuel map the transmission is fighting. A proper diesel tune smooths the step between low boost and full boost.

What is diesel car tuning?

A diesel car tune is a change to the calibration in your ECU. We adjust fuel maps, boost targets, timing and torque limiters, then test the result under load. If airflow is the limit, a freer flowing exhaust is worth doing before the tune, so the file suits the parts actually fitted.

Dyno tuning lets us hold the engine at set loads and watch fuel pressure, boost and exhaust gas temperature while we change things. A road test shows how it behaves in traffic and on hills, and most cars get both. We keep the standard file so the car can be put back to factory.

Performance Tuning Packages

Tuning at Willy’s starts with what you want the car to do. Daily driving, towing and fuel economy pull the diesel tuning calibration in different directions, so tell us which matters.

Power

A performance tune raises fuelling and boost together and cleans up the transition on to boost, so turbo lag drops and the mid range pulls harder. Limits come from what the engine, turbo and gearbox can take, and we set the file inside them.

Towing

A towing tune is aimed at low and mid range torque, not peak numbers. Loaded work runs the engine hot, so we watch exhaust gas temperature and keep fuelling where the engine can still cool itself on a climb. Tell us the van or trailer weight and how you tow, because a tune for a heavy van is not the same as one for a box trailer.

Efficiency

An economy tune leaves peak power close to standard and works on the part throttle areas where a diesel spends most of its life. Gains show up on steady highway running more than around town, and they disappear if you use the extra response.

Diesel is the bulk of what comes through both workshops, so we see the same engines and the same faults week after week. Before any tune we check the mechanical side, because a tired turbo, a leaking intercooler pipe or worn injectors will show up as a disappointing tune result rather than a fixed problem.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a diesel car tune take?

We get you back on the road as quickly as possible. On average, a tune-up can take a few hours, but we’ll let you know the exact time when you book your service.

Will tuning my diesel affect my warranty?

Modifying a vehicle does not automatically void a manufacturer’s warranty. To deny a warranty claim, manufacturers must provide evidence that a modification caused an issue. More information can be found on the ACCC website.

Can I tune my diesel myself?

While there are DIY options out there, we highly recommend leaving it to the pros. We’ve got the tools, experience, and knowledge to do the job right, without any risks.

How often should I get my diesel tuned?

Getting your engine tuned is usually only done once. However, if your requirements change, you’re no longer looking for power and want to go for more fuel efficiency or if you’re looking to tweak the power profile of your vehicle then a revision tune may be required.
