GWM Diesel

GWM Diesel Performance Tuning & Servicing

GWM has become one of the most popular value 4×4 ute brands on Australian roads, and the Cannon and Cannon Alpha are now a common sight towing vans and working sites across South East Queensland. At Willy’s Workshop we tune and service these utes properly, with the same diesel know-how we apply to European and Japanese platforms, from our workshops in Oxley (Brisbane) and Warana (Sunshine Coast).

The original Cannon runs the GW4D20 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel (around 120kW and 400Nm) paired with an 8-speed automatic, while the newer Cannon Alpha steps up to a larger 2.4-litre turbo-diesel. Both are honest, capable utes with braked towing in the 3000 to 3500kg range, but like every modern common-rail diesel they rely on a DPF, EGR and emissions hardware that needs the right care to stay reliable.

Whether you want more usable torque for towing and touring, or you simply want a GWM that is serviced and diagnosed by people who understand its emissions systems, our team delivers custom, dyno-verified tuning and thorough mechanical work. We do not flash generic files or cut corners on your driveline.

Engines We Tune

GWM diesel engines we tune

GW4D20 2.0L turbo-diesel (Cannon)
120 kW / 400 Nm
Four-cylinder common-rail with 8-speed auto and 3000 to 3500kg braked towing; DPF and EGR systems prone to carbon and soot build-up on short city trips.
2.4L turbo-diesel (Cannon Alpha)
120kW / 400Nm
Larger four-cylinder turbo-diesel in the heavier-duty Alpha; DPF and EGR emissions hardware that benefits from correct servicing and diagnosis to stay reliable.

Why choose Willy’s for your GWM

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning for GWM Cannon and Cannon Alpha diesels, developed and dyno-verified on our equipment, not off-the-shelf files.

  • Custom remap of the factory ECU tailored to your GW4D20 2.0L Cannon or 2.4L Cannon Alpha, targeting smoother, stronger mid-range torque for towing and touring
  • Every tune is dyno-verified before handover so the gains are real, repeatable and matched to your fuel and driving conditions
  • Tuning that respects the limits of the automatic transmission and driveline, so you get usable performance without hammering the gearbox
  • Throttle response and drivability improvements that make the ute feel more eager off idle and easier to manage under load

Servicing & Repair

Full mechanical servicing, diagnostics and emissions-system repair for GWM diesel utes, with the equipment and experience these common-rail engines need.

  • Logbook-style and major servicing for Cannon and Cannon Alpha, keeping your service history intact and your driveline healthy
  • DPF diagnosis, forced regeneration and cleaning, addressing the blocked-filter complaints common on short-trip and city-driven GWM utes
  • EGR valve, cooler and intake decarbonising to clear the carbon and soot build-up these engines are known for, restoring throttle response
  • Fault diagnosis on engine management, turbo and injection systems using proper scan tools, not guesswork

FAQ

GWM diesel FAQs

Is tuning a GWM Cannon worth it, and what does it cost?
For owners who tow, carry loads or tour, a custom tune is well worth it because it improves usable mid-range torque and drivability rather than just chasing peak numbers. Cost depends on your exact model, engine and what you want from the vehicle, so we provide a written quote after assessing your ute. Book it in or get a quote and we will talk you through realistic outcomes for your GWM.
Will tuning or servicing affect my GWM warranty?
This is an important question and we are upfront about it. Modifying the factory ECU can affect aspects of a manufacturer warranty, so we discuss the implications with you before any work and keep your servicing thorough and well documented. Many owners tune once their vehicle is out of warranty, or weigh up the trade-offs with us first. We never make that decision for you.
Can you fix DPF and EGR problems on my GWM, and is deleting them legal?
Yes, we diagnose and repair DPF blockages and EGR carbon and soot build-up, which are among the most common GWM diesel complaints. Tampering with or removing emissions equipment is not legal for road-registered vehicles in Australia, so our focus is on restoring these systems to work correctly, through regeneration, cleaning and repair, rather than deleting them.
How much extra power and torque can I expect from a GWM diesel tune?
Gains vary by engine, condition, fuel and the goals you set, which is exactly why every tune is custom and dyno-verified rather than a one-size-fits-all figure. We will not promise a specific number before we have your ute on the dyno. The aim with these utes is stronger, smoother torque where you actually use it, so the vehicle tows and drives better day to day.
Which GWM engines and models do you tune and service?
We work on the GWM Cannon with the GW4D20 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and the newer Cannon Alpha with its 2.4-litre turbo-diesel. The GWM Tank sold in Australia is petrol or hybrid rather than diesel, so our diesel tuning does not apply to it. If you are unsure of your variant, send us your details and we will confirm what we can do for your ute.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
You can book at either workshop, Oxley in Brisbane or Warana on the Sunshine Coast. A service or DPF and EGR job is typically completed within a day depending on condition and parts, while a custom dyno tune is usually a full-day booking so we can develop and verify it properly. Get in touch for a quote and we will give you a realistic timeframe for your GWM.
