Toyota Diesel

Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series (VDJ200) is one of the most capable touring and towing platforms ever sold in Australia, and its 4.5-litre 1VD-FTV V8 diesel is the heart of why owners trust it for long-distance work, heavy loads and serious off-road touring. Rated to tow 3,500kg braked, it is a genuine workhorse, but the factory tune is calibrated conservatively for emissions and worldwide fuel quality rather than for the way most Australian owners actually use the vehicle.

At Willy’s Workshop we specialise in getting more out of the 200 Series without compromising the longevity that makes it worth owning. Whether you are running a caravan up the range, loaded for a Cape York trip, or just want crisper throttle response and better fuel economy on the daily commute, our work is built around the real-world behaviour of the 1VD-FTV — its turbo characteristics, EGT management, and the differences between the earlier 151kW single-turbo non-DPF V8 (2007-2015) and the later 200kW twin-turbo DPF-equipped models from 2015 onward.

With workshops at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast, we offer custom, in-house, dyno-verified tuning alongside full mechanical servicing and repair. We tune to the factory ECU, we test on the dyno, and we set the vehicle up for the load, fuel and conditions you actually drive in — not a generic off-the-shelf file.

Engines We Tune

Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series diesel engines we tune

1VD-FTV 4.5L twin-turbo V8 (2015+, DPF)
200 kW / 650 Nm
AU-spec 200 Series twin-turbo V8; later models add a diesel particulate filter and stricter emissions equipment, so DPF, EGR and intake carbon management become key to keeping it running cleanly.
1VD-FTV 4.5L single-turbo V8 (2007-2015, non-DPF)
151 kW / 430 Nm
Earlier VDJ200 V8 with a single turbo and no DPF; strong towing platform whose main service watch-point is common-rail injector wear, which shows up as over-fuelling and smoke at higher kilometres.

Your LandCruiser 200's tune potential

Pick your engine to see typical gains from a Willys Workshop tune.

Indicative gains on a stock vehicle, measured on a dyno at the engine (crank) — wheel power reads lower (typically 15–20% on a 4WD). Actual results vary with vehicle condition, fuel quality and modifications.

Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series

Performance Tuning

Custom, dyno-verified tuning developed specifically for the 1VD-FTV V8

  • In-house custom ECU calibration written for your exact 200 Series — not a generic remote file — with sharper throttle response, stronger mid-range pull for towing, and smoother power delivery whether you run the earlier single-turbo or later twin-turbo V8.
  • Dyno tuning available at Willys Workshop, with before-and-after data so the gains are measured, not guessed
  • Calibration tailored to how you use the vehicle — caravan and heavy trailer towing, loaded touring, or improved daily fuel economy — with attention to the differences between the 2007-2015 single-turbo non-DPF and 2015+ twin-turbo DPF-equipped models.
  • Supporting upgrades available where they genuinely help: exhaust, intercooling and intake work matched to the tune so gains are reliable and repeatable, not just bigger numbers on paper.

Servicing & Repair

Full mechanical servicing and diesel repair for the VDJ200 V8

  • Logbook-standard and major servicing using quality oils and filters suited to the 1VD-FTV, keeping warranty intact while caring for a high-value V8 diesel.
  • Common-rail injector diagnosis, testing and replacement — a known wear point on the 1VD-FTV, where over-fuelling and excessive smoke often trace back to ageing injectors, particularly on higher-kilometre vehicles.
  • DPF, EGR and emissions-system servicing on 2015+ models, including diagnosis of soot loading, blocked DPF, EGR cooler and intake carbon build-up that cause limp mode, smoke and poor economy.
  • Pre-trip and pre-tow inspections covering cooling, driveline, brakes and turbo health — essential before loading a 200 Series for long-distance touring or towing near its 3,500kg braked limit.

FAQ

Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series diesel FAQs

Is tuning the LandCruiser 200 Series worth it, and what does it cost?
For most owners who tow or tour, yes. A properly developed custom tune sharpens throttle response, builds usable mid-range torque for towing and can improve fuel economy under load. Cost depends on whether you want tuning alone or a package with supporting hardware such as exhaust or intercooling, so we provide a written quote after discussing how you use the vehicle. Get a quote from our Oxley or Warana workshop and we will scope it to your goals.
Will tuning affect my Toyota warranty?
If your 200 Series is still under factory warranty, modifications can affect powertrain warranty coverage, and that is a decision only you can make. Many of our customers are out of factory warranty or accept the trade-off for the gains. We always discuss this openly before any work, and our servicing is carried out to a standard that keeps logbook servicing valid.
What about the DPF, EGR and emissions equipment — can it legally be removed?
In Australia it is illegal to remove or disable emissions equipment such as the DPF or EGR on a road-registered vehicle, and we do not delete emissions hardware on cars driven on public roads. What we can do is tune around the factory emissions systems and properly diagnose and service a blocked DPF, faulty EGR or carbon build-up so the system works as intended. Our focus is reliable, road-legal performance.
How much power and torque can I expect to gain?
Gains depend on your specific vehicle, its condition, supporting hardware and how conservatively we tune for your usage. The 2015+ twin-turbo V8 (200kW/650Nm from factory) and the earlier 151kW single-turbo respond differently, and because every 1VD-FTV is dyno-verified individually — and we prioritise long-term reliability and safe EGTs over headline figures — we quote realistic, measured results for your car. You will see the before-and-after on our dyno.
Which 200 Series engines and years do you tune?
We work on all VDJ200 LandCruisers fitted with the 4.5-litre 1VD-FTV V8 diesel, from the 2007 introduction through to the end of production. That includes the earlier 2007-2015 single-turbo (non-DPF) models and the 2015-onward twin-turbo, DPF-equipped models, with the calibration tailored to your exact variant.
How do I book, and how long does it take?
You can book at either our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop. A custom tune is typically a full-day job because we develop and dyno-verify the calibration on your vehicle rather than flashing a pre-made file. Servicing and repair times vary with scope. Contact us to book a service or get a quote and we will confirm timing.
