Toyota Diesel

Toyota Fortuner Performance Tuning & Diesel Servicing

The Toyota Fortuner is the HiLux’s seven-seat, body-on-frame cousin: a part-time 4×4 wagon built on the same proven ladder chassis and powered by the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo-diesel. It’s a genuine touring and family-haul platform, but the factory tune is conservative, and the same after-treatment quirks that plague the wider GD-engine range show up here too. At Willys Workshop we work on the Fortuner as a known quantity, not a guess.

All Australian Fortuners run the 1GD-FTV: a DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder with common-rail direct injection, a variable-nozzle turbocharger, timing-chain drive and a factory diesel particulate filter. Pre-update cars were rated around 130kW, while the post-2020 revision lifted the automatic to 150kW and 500Nm. Most are paired with the six-speed automatic and part-time 4WD. Knowing exactly which variant and ECU calibration is in front of us means our tuning and diagnostics are matched to your car, not a generic file.

Loaded with people, gear, a caravan or a camper, a standard Fortuner can feel like it’s working hard through the mid-range and down to the DPF on around-town driving. Our job is to free up usable, reliable torque where you actually use it and to keep the emissions hardware healthy, so the car tows, touring and daily-drives better than it left the showroom. Servicing happens at our Oxley workshop in Brisbane and at Warana on the Sunshine Coast.

Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota Fortuner

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning developed and dyno-verified on the factory ECU — built for towing, touring and reliable daily driving.

  • Custom calibration written in-house on the factory 1GD-FTV ECU and verified on the dyno — no off-the-shelf generic file, and no piggyback module masking the real ECU values.
  • Tuned for usable low and mid-range torque where it counts when loaded, towing a van or climbing grades — smoother throttle response and less gear hunting from the six-speed auto.
  • Calibrated to suit your variant and fuel/EGT targets, with safe limits respected so the engine, turbo and transmission aren’t pushed beyond sensible margins.
  • Honest pre- and post-tune dyno figures so you see the actual gains for your Fortuner, plus optional towing-focused mapping for heavy-load work.

Servicing & Repair

Full diesel servicing and repair from technicians who know the 1GD-FTV’s real-world weak points — DPF, the fifth injector and oil dilution.

  • Logbook and major diesel servicing using the correct low-SAPS oil and genuine-quality filters — critical on the GD engine, where oil dilution and consumption are common complaints.
  • DPF health checks, forced regeneration and cleaning, plus diagnosis of failed regen cycles and white-smoke complaints — issues well documented across the 2015-2020 1GD-FTV range and its class action.
  • Fifth (in-exhaust) injector inspection and carbon-buildup remediation, a known cause of DPF blockages and regen faults on these engines.
  • Common-rail injection, variable-nozzle turbo, EGR, glow plug, cooling and driveline diagnostics — fault-code scanning and live-data testing to find the root cause, not just clear the light.

FAQ

Toyota Fortuner diesel FAQs

Will tuning my Fortuner cause DPF or reliability problems?
Done properly, a custom tune should not harm a healthy DPF system. The 1GD-FTV’s DPF and fifth-injector issues are largely a factory after-treatment design problem, not something caused by sensible tuning. We assess the condition of your DPF and emissions hardware first, then write a calibration with safe fuelling and exhaust-gas-temperature targets. If your car already has carbon or regen faults, we address those before tuning.
How much power and torque will a tune add to my 2.8 Fortuner?
It depends on your exact variant and ECU calibration — pre-update cars sit around 130kW while the post-2020 auto is rated at 150kW/500Nm from factory. Rather than quote a generic headline figure, we tune your specific car on the dyno and give you honest before-and-after numbers, with the gains focused on usable mid-range torque for towing and touring.
Is the Fortuner good for towing and touring, and can you set it up for that?
Yes. It shares the HiLux’s ladder chassis and 1GD-FTV driveline, so it’s a capable seven-seat tow and tour platform. The standard tune can feel flat when loaded, so we offer towing-focused mapping that builds low and mid-range torque to reduce throttle effort and gear hunting on hills. We can also advise on servicing intervals and DPF management for heavy-load and short-trip use.
Will tuning my Fortuner keep it road-legal and is the DPF/EGR left intact?
Yes. Our Fortuner ECU tuning is calibration-only and works within the factory emissions hardware, so the DPF and EGR stay fitted and functioning. We do not delete or remove emissions equipment, which keeps your 1GD-FTV compliant for road use in Queensland. If your DPF is already struggling, we diagnose that separately at our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop before any tune so we are not masking an underlying fault.
Which Fortuner engines and model years do you tune?
We tune the 1GD-FTV 2.8L turbo-diesel that powers the Fortuner, covering both the pre-2020 variant and the updated post-2020 auto. The post-2020 update brought a meaningful factory increase in outputs, so the calibration approach differs between the earlier and later engines. Tell us your build date and transmission when booking and we will confirm the exact map and expected result for your specific Fortuner.
What is the dyno process and how long does a Fortuner tune take?
Your Fortuner is run on our in-house dyno so we can read real airflow, boost, EGT and fuelling under load rather than guessing. We log baseline figures, develop and verify the calibration in stages, then re-run to confirm the gains and that temperatures and pressures stay within safe limits. Most Fortuner tunes are completed within a day; we will give you a firm timeframe and a quote when you book at Oxley or Warana.
