Toyota LandCruiser 100 Series Tuning & Diesel Servicing

The Toyota LandCruiser 100 Series is one of the most respected touring 4WDs ever sold in Australia, and the 4.2-litre turbo-diesel 1HD-FTE is the engine most owners build their trips around. Producing 150kW and 430Nm in Australian specification, the 1HD-FTE pairs a tough straight-six bottom end with a Denso rotary injection pump, making it a strong, simple platform that responds well to careful, in-house tuning. Because the 100 Series predates the modern emissions era, there is no DPF, no EGR-and-AdBlue maze and no factory complexity to work around.

Earlier and base-model 100 Series wagons ran the naturally aspirated 1HZ 4.2-litre diesel, producing 96kW and 285Nm. The 1HZ is famously durable and easy to live with, but it is a very different proposition to the turbocharged 1HD-FTE when it comes to performance work. Knowing exactly which engine is in your Cruiser, and how it has been maintained over what is now a long service life, is the first step we take before recommending anything.

At Willy’s Workshop we treat the 100 Series as the long-distance tourer it was built to be. From our Oxley workshop in Brisbane and our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast, we tune, service and repair these vehicles with the goal of reliable, repeatable power and a Cruiser you can trust thousands of kilometres from home.

Engines We Tune

Toyota LandCruiser 100 Series diesel engines we tune

1HD-FTE 4.2L turbo-diesel (6-cyl)
150 kW / 430 Nm
The performance pick of the 100 Series. Strong straight-six with a Denso rotary injection pump that responds well to custom tuning; common wear areas include the timing control valve, injectors and oil and soot build-up in the intake and intercooler.
1HZ 4.2L naturally aspirated diesel (6-cyl)
96 kW / 285 Nm
Fitted to earlier and base-model wagons. Famously durable and simple, but without a turbo the performance ceiling is low, so tuning gains are limited unless forced induction is added.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota LandCruiser 100 Series

Performance Tuning

Custom 1HD-FTE tuning developed and dyno-verified in-house, with drivability and engine longevity treated as the priority over headline numbers.

  • Custom fuel and boost calibration for the 1HD-FTE 4.2L turbo-diesel, developed on our own dyno rather than loaded from a generic file
  • Every tune verified under load on the dyno and road-tested, with exhaust gas temperatures and boost monitored to keep the engine inside safe limits
  • Tuning matched to supporting modifications such as an intercooler upgrade, high-flow exhaust and upgraded turbo where fitted, so the calibration suits your actual setup
  • Honest assessment for naturally aspirated 1HZ wagons, where gains are limited without forced induction and we will tell you straight what is and is not worth doing

Servicing & Repair

Full mechanical servicing and diesel repair for 100 Series Cruisers, from routine maintenance to diagnosing the wear items that show up after high kilometres.

  • Scheduled servicing, oil and filter changes and fuel system maintenance to keep a high-kilometre 1HD-FTE or 1HZ running reliably for touring
  • Denso injection pump and timing control valve diagnosis and repair, a known wear area on the 1HD-FTE that affects starting, smoke and performance
  • Injector testing and replacement, plus intake and intercooler cleaning to clear the oil and soot build-up these engines accumulate over time
  • Pre-trip inspections, cooling system checks and general diesel mechanical repair so your Cruiser is sorted before a long remote trip, not after

FAQ

Toyota LandCruiser 100 Series diesel FAQs

Is tuning a 100 Series LandCruiser worth it?
For the turbocharged 1HD-FTE, yes. A custom in-house tune can deliver noticeably improved throttle response, stronger mid-range pulling power and smoother towing and touring performance, all of which make a big difference in a heavy 4WD. The naturally aspirated 1HZ is a different story, as meaningful gains are limited without forced induction, so we give you an honest assessment before you spend anything. Contact us for a quote based on your specific vehicle and how you use it.
Will tuning my LandCruiser affect my warranty?
The 100 Series is long out of factory warranty given its age, so manufacturer warranty is rarely a concern on these vehicles. If you have any aftermarket driveline or extended cover, we recommend checking the terms before modifying. We are always happy to talk through how a tune interacts with any cover you hold so there are no surprises.
Does the 100 Series have a DPF, EGR or AdBlue system to worry about?
No. The 100 Series predates the modern emissions era, so there is no diesel particulate filter, no AdBlue or SCR system, and tuning is far simpler as a result. This is one of the reasons the 1HD-FTE is such a popular platform. Our tuning focuses on safe, reliable fuel and boost calibration rather than working around emissions hardware.
How much extra power can I expect from a tuned 1HD-FTE?
Gains depend heavily on what supporting modifications are fitted, such as an intercooler upgrade, exhaust and turbo, as well as the condition of your individual engine. Rather than quote a number we cannot stand behind, we measure your Cruiser on the dyno first and then tune to a safe, verified result. We will discuss realistic expectations for your exact setup before we begin.
Which engines and years does this cover?
The 100 Series ran from 1998 to 2007. The turbo-diesel 1HD-FTE 4.2-litre six (150kW/430Nm) became available in the wagon from around 2000 and is the main focus for performance tuning. Earlier and base-model wagons used the naturally aspirated 1HZ 4.2-litre (96kW/285Nm). We work on both and will confirm exactly which engine is in your vehicle before recommending anything.
How do I book and how long does it take?
You can book at either our Oxley workshop in Brisbane or our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. A custom tune is typically a full day on the dyno so we can develop and verify the calibration properly, while servicing and repair timeframes depend on the work involved. Get in touch and we will give you a clear quote and timeframe for your 100 Series.
