Powerbond harmonic balancers for Holden V8s, Nissan Patrol and Navara diesels, Toyota LandCruiser diesels, and Ford and Chevrolet V8s. The range includes standard replacement balancers and, for the Holden LS, race and underdrive versions. Replace the balancer when the rubber has cracked or the outer ring has moved, or when the engine is being rebuilt. Other makes are on the harmonic balancers page.

Why balancers wear out

A harmonic balancer damps the twisting vibration in the crankshaft. Most use a rubber layer bonded between the hub and the outer ring, and with heat and age that rubber hardens, cracks and can let the outer ring slip. Once it slips, the timing marks on the ring no longer line up, and in time the ring can come away from the hub. Check it whenever the belts are off, and replace it during an engine rebuild if it shows any cracking.

Getting the right one

Many engines have more than one balancer. The Nissan TD42 has a small nose balancer for the non-turbo engine and a big nose balancer for the TD42T and TD42TI, the ZD30 and ZD30 common rail are listed separately, and the Ford 302 and 351 take different balancers for Windsor and Cleveland engines. Chevrolet small blocks are listed by outer diameter. Check your engine code and build, then see the TD42 or LS1 page for the parts that go with it.

Underdrive and race balancers

The 10% and 25% underdrive balancers for the LS1 and LS2 turn the belt-driven accessories slower than standard, which takes a little load off a performance engine. It also means the alternator and water pump turn slower at idle, so talk to us before fitting one to a car that spends its days in traffic. The race balancer is listed for the LS1 5.7.

Powerbond balancer FAQs

How do I know if my harmonic balancer is failing?

Look for cracked or bulging rubber between the hub and the outer ring, a timing mark that no longer lines up, or a pulley that wobbles at idle. Any of these means it is due, because a ring that separates can take the belts with it and damage the front of the engine.
