The Mitsubishi 4D55 is a 2.3 litre, 2,346 cc inline four diesel with a single overhead cam and 8 valves. It is indirect injection through a mechanical pump and naturally aspirated. Mitsubishi built it from 1980 into the late 1980s and it powered the early MD/MF Triton before the 2.5 litre 4D56 took over. The 4D55 list runs to 10 parts.
4D55 timing belt and tensioner
The 4D55 runs a timing belt, not a chain. Listed here are the balance shaft belt and a belt tensioner shared with the 4D56. Do both belts together: the balance shaft belt sits behind the main belt, so leaving it means a second teardown.
4D55 water pump
Two water pumps: one boxed across the 4D55, 4D55T, 4D56 and 4D56T, and one for the 2 bolt thermostat housing. Count the bolts on your thermostat housing before you order, the bolt pattern is what separates the two listings.
Rings and bearings
NPR and RIK ring sets, the RIK at 1mm oversize. NDC and TDC conrod bearing sets and an ACL main set. The 4D55 shares its 91.1mm bore with the 4D56 and gets its 2.3 litres from a shorter 90mm stroke, so ring sets cross over. The bearing sets are also boxed for the 2.6 litre 4G54 Astron petrol.
