The Chevrolet 283 is a 4.6 litre small block V8 of 283 cubic inches. It runs pushrod overhead valves with two valves per cylinder. Chevrolet built it from 1957 to 1967 in passenger cars and light trucks. Most were carburetted, with Rochester fuel injection offered on the Corvette. Bearings make up all 4 parts listed under the 283 here, three main sets and one conrod set.
Main bearing sets for the small journal 283
Three main bearing sets are listed here, all for the 265, 283, 302 and 327 small journal blocks. ACL and NDC sets are both listed, including 0.75mm undersize shells. What separates the 283 from the 327 is bore and stroke rather than the main journals. The 283 measures 3.875 by 3.00 inches, while the 327 goes to 4.00 by 3.25.
Conrod bearings
The ACL conrod bearing set is listed for the 283 on its own rather than shared across the family, and it is a 0.75mm undersize. Measure the journals before ordering undersize shells, because a crank that has already been ground once may need more than 0.75mm.
