The Toyota 21R is a 2.0 litre inline four, SOHC with 8 valves, carburetted and naturally aspirated. It is the small bore member of the R family: an 84mm bore on the same 89mm stroke as the 2.4 litre 22R, which runs 92mm. Toyota built it from 1978 to about 1984 for the Corona RT130 series and the early petrol Hilux RN series. We hold 18 parts for this engine.
Timing chain, guides and gears
The 21R runs a timing chain, not a belt. Single and double row 98 link chains are listed with the TCD11, TCD12 and left hand curved guides. There is also a genuine double row tensioner plus crankshaft and camshaft timing gears. Early engines ran the double row chain and the 1982 to 1984 engines a single row, so count the rows on the old chain and order the crank and cam gears to match, they are not interchangeable.
Main and conrod bearings
Main and conrod bearing sets from NDC and ACL list the 21R together with the 18R, 20R and 22R. The 18R is the earlier 2.0 on an 88.5mm bore, the 20R is the 2.2 and the 22R the 2.4, so most of what sits here also appears on the 22R page.
