The Holden 186 is the 186 cubic inch, 3.0 litre red motor: a cast iron inline six with a pushrod overhead valve head, carburetted and naturally aspirated. Holden built it from 1966 to 1971 for the HK, HT and HG Kingswood, and most parts here are shared with the 173 and 202 that carried the HK-HZ and HQ-WB range on to 1984.The 186 list runs to 16 parts.
Holden 186 gaskets
A Permaseal full gasket set for the 149 to 186 blocks, a manifold gasket for the 9 port red head, and side plate and sump gaskets.
186 pistons, rings and bearings
ACL pistons and rings at 2mm oversize, Hastings chrome rings at 3.625 inch, and ACL and NDC main and conrod bearing sets down to 0.75mm undersize. The 186 shares its 3.625 inch bore with the 202, so rings cross over, but the main bearing sets here are boxed for the 138 to 186 only. Mic the journals first: undersize sets are for a ground crank.
186 timing gears
The Holden 186 is gear driven, crank gear to cam gear, with no timing chain and no belt. NVP straight cut and alloy timing gear sets cover the 149 to 202 red motors and replace the factory fibre cam gear that strips with age.
The rest of our Holden 186 stock
A front crankshaft timing cover seal shared with the 253 and 308 V8s, and the hot box gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds. That is the full Red 186ci list.
