The Holden 179 is the 179 cubic inch, 2.9 litre red motor: an inline six with a pushrod overhead valve head, carburetted and naturally aspirated. Holden fitted it to the EH and HD from 1963 to 1966 before the 3.0 litre 186 replaced it. Most parts here cover the whole red six family: HD-HZ and HQ-WB Kingswood and VB-VL Commodore.Stock for the 179 runs to 13 parts.
Holden 179 bearings and ring sets
ACL main and conrod bearing sets, an ACL race conrod set and an NDC main set at 0.75mm undersize, plus a RIK ring set at 1mm oversize. The Holden 179 runs a 3.5625 inch bore, a sixteenth under the 186, so its rings are boxed with the Chevrolet 194 and will not seat in a 186 block: measure the bore before ordering.
179 timing gears
The Holden 179 is gear driven, crank gear to cam gear, with no timing chain and no belt. NVP straight cut and alloy sets and Crow Cams helical and adjustable straight cut sets replace the factory fibre cam gear.
179 gaskets
A Permaseal full gasket set for the 149 to 186 blocks, a Permaseal manifold gasket for the 9 port red head and a sump gasket.
