Nissan’s diesel four-wheel drives and utes are some of the most popular working vehicles on Queensland roads, but each engine family carries its own personality. The Navara NP300 with its YS23DDTT 2.3-litre twin-turbo is a refined, efficient unit that responds beautifully to a properly calibrated tune. The older D40 and D22 Navaras and the R51 Pathfinder run the YD25DDTi 2.5-litre, an engine with strong torque but a well-documented single-row timing chain weakness, and outputs that vary considerably across model and year. The Patrol line spans the much-loved (and much-debated) ZD30 3.0-litre and the legendary TD42 4.2-litre six. Willy’s Workshop knows the difference between them, and we tune and service each one on its own terms.

We are a premium diesel performance and mechanical workshop with locations at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast. Every Nissan tune we write is custom, developed in-house on our dyno against your actual vehicle’s data, not flashed from a generic off-the-shelf file. We work with the factory ECU, verify every result on the rollers, and prioritise reliability and drivability as much as outright numbers, which matters enormously on engines like the ZD30 that have a reputation for letting go when pushed carelessly.

140 kW / 450 Nm

Refined, efficient twin-turbo; sensitive to fuel and oil quality. DPF and EGR carbon build-up on short-trip driving, plus timing chain and injector wear to watch.

YD25DDTi 2.5L (Navara D40/D22, R51 Pathfinder)

140kW / 450Nm

Strong-torque workhorse, but outputs vary widely: the high-output D40 and Pathfinder reach around 140 kW / 450 Nm while the D22 is much lower. Let down by a single-row fuel-pump-drive timing chain that can fail early; upgrading to a duplex chain kit is the proven fix.

ZD30 3.0L (Patrol GU)

118kW / 380Nm

Capable but has a reputation for melting or cracking pistons from MAF contamination, over-boost and EGR-skewed mixtures. Correct oil capacity and conservative tuning are essential.

TD42 4.2L (Patrol)

114kW / 280Nm

The legendary bulletproof six, available factory naturally aspirated, turbo or turbo-intercooled. Robust and long-lived, and a favourite for reliable touring and towing builds.

How much does a custom Nissan diesel tune cost, and is it worth it?

Pricing depends on the engine, the hardware fitted and the goals for the build, so we provide a written quote after discussing your Navara, Patrol or Pathfinder. A custom dyno-developed tune is worth it when you want measurable, reliable gains in usable torque and drivability rather than a generic flash. We focus on results that suit Queensland towing and touring, and every job is verified on the dyno. Contact either workshop for a quote.

Will tuning my Nissan void the factory warranty?

If your vehicle is still within the manufacturer warranty period, any modification can potentially affect warranty on related components, so we will always discuss this with you first. Many owners tune vehicles that are out of factory warranty, or accept the trade-off knowingly. Because we work with the factory ECU and keep your original calibration on file, the vehicle can be returned to standard if needed. Talk to us about your situation before booking.

Can you help with DPF, EGR or AdBlue issues, and what is legal in Australia?

Yes. We diagnose and service DPF and EGR systems on NP300 Navaras and manage carbon and regeneration faults that are common on short-trip vehicles. Australian-market Nissan Navara and Patrol diesels of this era generally run a passive DPF and EGR rather than AdBlue SCR. Emissions equipment is required to remain functional for road-registered vehicles, so our work is centred on keeping these systems healthy and operating correctly, not on illegal deletes. We will explain the compliant options for your vehicle.

What performance gains can I expect from a Nissan diesel tune?

Gains vary by engine, condition and supporting hardware, so we never quote a fixed number before seeing your vehicle on the dyno. In general, the YS23DDTT and YD25DDTi respond well in mid-range torque, which is where towing and everyday driving benefit most. On the ZD30 we deliberately tune conservatively to protect the engine. You will receive a before-and-after dyno result so the improvement is measured, not guessed.

Which Nissan engines and years do you tune and service?

We cover the Navara NP300 (YS23DDTT 2.3-litre twin-turbo), the Navara D40 and D22 and R51 Pathfinder (YD25DDTi 2.5-litre), and the Patrol with the ZD30 3.0-litre and TD42 4.2-litre.
