Land Rover Diesel

Land Rover Defender Tuning & Diesel Servicing

The current Land Rover Defender (L663, 2020 onwards) is a very different machine to the boxy original. Underneath the aluminium monocoque sits Land Rover’s 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six turbo-diesel with 48V mild-hybrid assistance, sold here as the D200, D250 and D300. It is a genuinely capable platform, but it is also a complex, emissions-heavy European diesel that rewards owners who understand how it works and have it maintained by people who do.

At Willy’s Workshop we treat the Defender as the premium diesel it is. The Ingenium six is a strong, smooth engine, yet it relies on a DPF, an EGR circuit and an AdBlue/SCR system that all need to be in good health to deliver the economy and response Land Rover intended. Towing a van or boat near the 3,500kg rating, short-trip suburban driving around Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, or hard work in the dirt each place very different demands on these systems. Getting the calibration and servicing right is what keeps a Defender driving the way it should for the long term.

We work on the L663 from both of our QLD workshops, Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast. Whether you want sharper throttle response and stronger mid-range for towing, or you simply want a thorough diesel service from a workshop that knows the Ingenium platform inside out, we can help.

Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Land Rover Defender

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning for the Defender’s Ingenium diesel, developed on our dyno and calibrated to your exact engine, fuel and intended use.

  • Custom calibration on the factory ECU, written specifically for the D200, D250 or D300 you bring in, never a generic off-the-shelf file flashed blind.
  • Real, measurable gains in throttle response, mid-range torque and towing drivability, the area Defender owners notice most when hauling near the 3,500kg limit.
  • Every tune is dyno-verified before the car leaves us, so power, fuel delivery and temperatures are confirmed under load rather than assumed.
  • Calibration tailored to how you actually use the vehicle, from long-distance touring and towing to mixed on and off-road driving across South East Queensland.

Servicing & Repair

Full mechanical servicing and diagnostics for the Land Rover Defender, with particular attention to the emissions and driveline systems these vehicles depend on.

  • Logged diesel servicing using correct-spec oil and filters, with proper attention to the timing chain, oil control and cooling that keep the Ingenium six healthy.
  • DPF, EGR and AdBlue/SCR diagnosis and servicing, including blocked-filter regeneration faults, EGR carbon build-up and SCR warning lights.
  • Manufacturer-level fault-code diagnostics for limp mode, injector and turbocharger issues, and the mild-hybrid driveline faults reported on the L663 diesels.
  • Pre-purchase inspections and towing-readiness checks, ideal if you are buying a used Defender or preparing one for serious caravan or boat duty.

FAQ

Land Rover Defender diesel FAQs

Is it worth tuning a Land Rover Defender diesel, and what does it cost?
For most owners, yes, particularly if you tow or cover long distances. A custom tune sharpens throttle response and lifts mid-range torque where the Ingenium six does its work, which makes the Defender far more relaxed under load. Cost depends on the engine variant and exactly what you want from the car, so we provide a written quote after discussing your vehicle and goals. Get a quote from our Oxley or Warana workshop and we will give you an honest assessment before any work starts.
Will tuning my Defender void the Land Rover warranty?
If your Defender is still within the factory warranty period, any modification to the engine calibration can affect warranty coverage on related components, and that is a decision only you can make. We are upfront about this. Many of our Defender customers are out of the factory warranty window, or choose to tune with their eyes open. We are happy to talk through the implications for your specific car and year before you commit.
Can you delete the DPF, EGR or AdBlue system, and is that legal in Australia?
Removing or disabling emissions equipment such as the DPF, EGR or AdBlue/SCR system is not legal for road-registered vehicles in Australia, and we do not offer that for cars used on the road. What we do is diagnose and repair these systems so they work as designed, including clearing blocked-DPF regeneration faults and EGR carbon issues, which is usually what owners actually need to get the car running properly again.
What sort of gains can I expect from a Defender tune?
Gains depend on the specific engine, its condition and your fuel, which is exactly why we tune on the dyno rather than quoting a fixed number. The most valuable improvement for most Defender owners is not a peak figure but stronger, more responsive mid-range torque for everyday driving and towing. We confirm the actual result on our dyno and explain what your particular car achieved.
Which Defender engines and years do you work on?
We work across the current L663 Defender from 2020 onward, focusing on the 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six turbo-diesels badged D200, D250 and D300. As a diesel specialist, the Ingenium six is exactly the platform we know best. If you are unsure which engine your Defender has, give us the build year and badge and we will confirm what we can do for it.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
You can book at either our Oxley workshop in Brisbane or our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. A standard diesel service is generally a same-day job, while custom dyno tuning is typically booked as a dedicated session so we can calibrate and verify the result properly. Contact us with your Defender’s details and we will arrange a time and give you a realistic timeframe.
