Land Rover Diesel

Range Rover & Range Rover Sport Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are premium long-distance tourers, and the diesel versions sold in Australia have earned a loyal following for their quiet, effortless torque. The current flagship oil-burner is the 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six D350, a 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) unit producing 258kW and 700Nm. Earlier examples ran the 3.0 V6 diesel in TDV6 and later SDV6 forms, while top-spec models used the 4.4-litre SDV8. Whichever generation you own, Willy’s Workshop treats it as the premium machine it is.

These are sophisticated European diesels, and that sophistication brings real-world maintenance demands. Range Rover diesels rely on EGR, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and an AdBlue/SCR after-treatment system to meet emissions standards, and they use a timing chain (Ingenium) or timing belt (V6/V8) that depends entirely on clean, in-spec engine oil. Short-trip driving, missed regenerations and stretched service intervals are where problems begin, so correct servicing is not optional on these vehicles, it is the difference between a refined tourer and an expensive headache.

Willy’s Workshop is a premium diesel performance and mechanical workshop with locations at Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast. We tune and service Range Rover and Range Rover Sport diesels in-house, with every calibration developed on our own dyno rather than flashed from a generic file. From a precision ECU recalibration to a full service and fault diagnosis, your Range Rover is looked after by people who understand both the platform and the performance side.

Engines We Tune

Range Rover diesel engines we tune

3.0L Ingenium inline-six D350 (MHEV)
258 kW / 700 Nm
Current flagship diesel with 48V mild-hybrid assistance; smooth and torquey, but relies on correct low-SAPS oil, healthy DPF regeneration and AdBlue/SCR to stay trouble-free.
3.0L SDV6 diesel
190kW / 600Nm
Twin-turbo V6; strong performer, but watch for restricted-performance messages from secondary-turbo actuator and changeover-valve faults, plus EGR carbon build-up.
3.0L TDV6 diesel
190kW / 600Nm
Earlier version of the same 3.0 V6 diesel family; shares timing-belt and oil-dilution vulnerabilities with the SDV6, so disciplined servicing and correct oil are essential to longevity.
4.4L SDV8 diesel
250kW / 700Nm
Top-spec V8 diesel offering effortless torque for touring and towing; rewards proper logbook servicing and prompt attention to EGR and DPF maintenance.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Range Rover

Performance Tuning

Custom in-house ECU calibration for Range Rover diesels, developed and verified on our own dyno

  • Custom-written calibration for the D350 Ingenium inline-six, SDV6, TDV6 and SDV8 diesels, tuned to your specific vehicle rather than a generic off-the-shelf file
  • Smoother throttle response, stronger mid-range torque and improved drivability for towing and highway touring, all developed on our in-house dyno
  • Factory ECU retained and reflashed, so there is no piggyback box hidden under the bonnet compromising reliability or resale
  • Calibrations developed with the standard DPF, EGR and AdBlue/SCR hardware in mind, with every change dyno-verified for safe operation on Australian diesel

Servicing & Repair

Manufacturer-correct servicing, diagnostics and repair for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport diesels

  • Logbook-style servicing using the correct low-SAPS oil grade, critical on Ingenium (timing chain) and V6/V8 (timing belt) diesels to protect the timing drive and minimise oil dilution from DPF regeneration
  • EGR, DPF and AdBlue/SCR diagnosis and cleaning, including limp-mode and restricted-performance faults caused by carbon build-up or after-treatment issues
  • Timing chain (Ingenium) or belt (V6/V8) inspection and replacement, plus diagnosis of cold-start rattle, a known weak point linked to oil dilution and stretched service intervals
  • Full diagnostic scanning for restricted-performance messages, including secondary-turbo actuator and changeover-valve faults common on the SDV6

FAQ

Range Rover diesel FAQs

Is tuning a Range Rover diesel worth it, and what does it cost?
For owners who tow, cover long distances or simply want crisper response from a heavy luxury SUV, a custom tune transforms drivability by sharpening throttle and strengthening mid-range torque. Cost depends on the engine and the work involved, so we provide a written quote after discussing your vehicle and goals. Every tune is developed in-house on our dyno rather than a generic file, which is where the real value lies. Contact our Oxley or Warana workshop for a quote.
Will tuning or servicing affect my Range Rover’s warranty?
If your Range Rover is still within the manufacturer warranty period, any modification including an ECU tune can affect warranty coverage, so it is worth weighing that up first. Many of the diesels we tune are out of factory warranty. We are happy to talk through your situation honestly before any work begins so you can make an informed decision.
What about the DPF, EGR and AdBlue system, and is removal legal?
In Australia it is illegal to remove or disable emissions equipment such as the DPF, EGR or AdBlue/SCR system on a road-registered vehicle. We do not delete emissions hardware. Instead we develop calibrations that work with the factory after-treatment in place, and we diagnose and repair EGR, DPF and AdBlue faults properly so the system functions as it should.
What performance gains can I expect from a Range Rover diesel tune?
Gains vary by engine and configuration, which is exactly why we tune on the dyno rather than quoting a single headline figure. Realistically, owners notice the biggest improvement in throttle response, mid-range pulling power and overall drivability rather than peak numbers alone. We measure before-and-after results on our own dyno so you can see the actual outcome for your vehicle.
Which Range Rover diesel engines and years do you work on?
We service and tune the full diesel range, including the current 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six (D-series, such as the D350 MHEV), the earlier 3.0 V6 diesel in TDV6 and SDV6 forms, and the 4.4-litre SDV8. This covers both Range Rover and Range Rover Sport across the generations sold in Australia. If you are unsure which engine you have, send us your VIN or build details and we will confirm.
How do I book, and how long will my Range Rover be in the workshop?
Booking is simple, just call or message our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop and we will find a time that suits. A standard service is usually a same-day job, while a custom dyno-developed tune is typically booked for a full day so the calibration can be developed and verified properly. Diagnostic and repair timeframes depend on the fault, which we will confirm once we have assessed the vehicle.
