Toyota HiLux N80 Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The N80 HiLux is the current GUN-series ute, in showrooms since 2015 and one of Australia’s best-selling diesel utes. Under the factory emissions calibration sits real, usable performance we unlock with an in-house custom tune — and we know the N80’s DPF, EGR and airbox-dusting quirks better than most.

We tune every N80 on the factory Denso ECU, on our own dyno, developed specifically for your engine and how you use the truck — towing, touring or daily driving — never a generic off-the-shelf file.

Because the N80 runs full diesel-particulate and EGR emissions equipment, servicing is just as important as tuning. Dust bypassing the factory airbox and corrupting the MAF sensor is a well-known N80 trait that triggers limp mode, and DPF/EGR carbon build-up is common on trucks doing mostly short trips. We diagnose and fix both properly.

Engines We Tune

Toyota HiLux N80 diesel engines we tune

1GD-FTV 2.8L (GUN, current)
150 kW / 500 Nm
Common-rail VNT diesel; earlier models 130kW. DPF and EGR equipped and subject to the well-known dusting and DPF issues; strong, tunable platform.
2GD-FTV 2.4L (GUN, current)
110 kW / 400 Nm
Smaller-capacity common-rail VNT diesel with DPF and EGR. Shares the GD-series carbon, DPF and airbox-dusting traits; responds well to custom calibration.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota HiLux N80

Performance Tuning

Custom, dyno-verified ECU tuning developed in-house on the factory Denso ECU for the N80’s 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV diesels.

  • Custom in-house tuning of the 2.8L 1GD-FTV (130kW early models, up to 150kW/500Nm on later auto variants) and 2.4L 2GD-FTV (110kW/400Nm).
  • Dyno-verified before-and-after results, with every calibration developed on your specific truck rather than loaded from a generic file.
  • Emissions equipment kept intact — DPF and EGR are not removed — while sharper throttle response and stronger mid-range torque are unlocked.
  • Calibration matched to supporting hardware such as intakes, exhausts and intercoolers so the engine is optimised as a complete package.

Servicing & Repair

Servicing and repair built around the N80’s DPF, EGR and airbox-dusting issues.

  • DPF and EGR diagnosis, cleaning and repair on the 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV, addressing the carbon and soot build-up these engines are prone to.
  • Airbox and MAF sensor service for the well-documented N80 dusting issue, where dust bypassing the air filter corrupts the mass air-flow sensor and triggers limp mode.
  • Routine logbook servicing kept to manufacturer schedules so new-car and extended warranties stay protected.
  • Straight answers on your specific N80’s condition before any tuning work is recommended.

FAQ

Toyota HiLux N80 diesel FAQs

What is a Toyota HiLux N80?
N80 is the internal chassis code for the current, eighth-generation Toyota HiLux, sold in Australia from 2015 (GUN-series). It replaced the N70 (KUN-series) and introduced the 1GD-FTV 2.8L and 2GD-FTV 2.4L engines with factory DPF and EGR emissions equipment.
N70 or N80 HiLux — which one do I have?
If your HiLux is a 2015-onward model with a factory DPF (diesel particulate filter) and EGR emissions system, it’s an N80. If it was built 2005-2015 without a factory DPF, it’s an N70. Tell us your build year and badge and we’ll confirm which generation and engine you have.
Can I delete the DPF, EGR or AdBlue on my N80 HiLux?
Diesel N80 HiLuxes run a DPF and EGR as part of their factory emissions system, and tampering with emissions equipment on a road-registered vehicle is not legal in Australia. We focus on keeping these systems healthy — diagnosing faults, cleaning carbon and soot, and resolving the DPF and EGR issues this generation is known for, rather than removing emissions hardware.
Why does my N80 HiLux keep going into limp mode?
The most common cause on this generation is dust bypassing the factory airbox and corrupting the mass air-flow (MAF) sensor — a well-known N80 trait, especially on trucks that see dusty conditions. We service the airbox and MAF sensor to resolve it; the other common cause is DPF or EGR carbon build-up from short-trip driving.
What performance gains can I expect from an N80 HiLux tune?
Gains vary by engine (1GD-FTV or 2GD-FTV), year and supporting hardware, so we don’t quote fixed numbers up front. Every result is measured on our dyno and developed specifically for your N80, with the biggest real-world benefit usually being improved torque delivery and throttle response under load.
Will tuning my N80 HiLux affect the Toyota warranty?
Modifying the factory tune can affect aspects of your new-car warranty, particularly for driveline claims. If your N80 is still under Toyota warranty we’ll walk you through the considerations before any work starts so you can make an informed decision.
