Toyota Diesel

Toyota HiLux N70 Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The N70 HiLux (2005-2015) is the seventh-generation KUN-series ute, and it is still one of the most common diesels through our Oxley and Warana workshops. No factory DPF on this generation means a simpler, more straightforward tuning conversation than the newer N80 — but the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV D-4D engines have their own well-known faults that we know inside out.

We tune every N70 in-house on the factory Denso ECU, on our own dyno, matched to your exact engine, fuel and how the truck is actually used — towing, touring or daily driving. No generic off-the-shelf files.

Alongside tuning we handle the servicing and repair work this generation is known for: injector faults (rough idle, cold knock, white smoke, copper-washer failures) on the 1KD-FTV, and the shared D-4D EGR carbon build-up across both engines. If your N70 is due a logbook service or is showing one of these symptoms, we will diagnose it properly, not just clear a code.

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota HiLux N70

Performance Tuning

Custom, dyno-verified ECU tuning developed in-house on the factory Denso ECU for the N70’s 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV diesels.

  • Custom in-house tuning of the 3.0L 1KD-FTV (KUN26) and 2.5L 2KD-FTV (KUN16) D-4D engines, plus earlier 1KZ-TE and 5L-E HiLuxes that still come through the workshop.
  • Dyno-verified before-and-after results, with every calibration developed on your specific truck rather than loaded from a generic file.
  • Tuning targeted at real-world towing, touring and daily driving, with sharper throttle response and stronger mid-range torque.
  • No factory DPF to work around on this generation, which keeps the tuning conversation simpler than the newer emissions-heavy N80.

Servicing & Repair

Servicing and repair built around the N70’s well-known 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV faults.

  • EGR diagnosis and carbon cleaning across the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV D-4D range.
  • Routine logbook servicing, timing, cooling and turbo work on 1KD, 2KD, 1KZ-TE and 5L-E HiLuxes.

FAQ

Toyota HiLux N70 diesel FAQs

What is a Toyota HiLux N70?
N70 is the internal chassis code for the seventh-generation Toyota HiLux, sold in Australia from 2005 to 2015 as the KUN-series ute (KUN26 dual-cab/extra-cab, KUN16 single-cab). It replaced the N50/N60 HiLux and was itself replaced by the N80 (GUN-series) in 2015.
N70 or N80 HiLux — which one do I have?
If your HiLux was built from 2005 to 2015 and does not have a factory DPF (diesel particulate filter), it’s an N70. If it’s a 2015-onward model with a DPF and EGR emissions system, it’s an N80. Tell us your build year and badge (SR, SR5, Workmate, etc.) and we’ll confirm which generation and engine you have.
Does the N70 HiLux have a DPF?
No. The N70 (2005-2015) predates Toyota’s move to a factory DPF on the HiLux, which arrived with the N80 in 2015. The N70 does have an EGR system, and EGR carbon build-up is a known issue we regularly diagnose and clean on both the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV.
What are the common problems with the N70 HiLux’s 1KD-FTV engine?
The 3.0L 1KD-FTV (KUN26) is a proven common-rail D-4D diesel, but it’s known for injector faults — rough idle, cold knock, white smoke and copper-washer failures — along with EGR carbon build-up. We test and replace injectors and clean EGR systems on these engines regularly at both our Oxley and Warana workshops.
Is it worth tuning an N70 HiLux in 2026?
Yes, for most owners. Even though the N70 is now 10-20 years old, the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV respond well to a properly developed tune, and plenty of well-maintained N70s are still doing serious towing and touring work. We’ll check the condition of your specific truck — injectors, EGR, general health — before recommending a tune, since a tired engine should be sorted first.
How much does N70 HiLux tuning cost?
Cost depends on your exact engine (1KD-FTV or 2KD-FTV), condition and any supporting modifications, so we quote once we know your specific truck. Book your N70 in or request a quote and we’ll talk through realistic outcomes.
