The Holden 173 is the 2.85 litre six, red until 1980 and blue after it: an inline six with pushrod overhead valves, naturally aspirated and carburetted. Holden built it from 1971 to 1984 for the HQ to HZ and the VB, VC and VH Commodore, listed here under VB-VL. It shares the 3.3 litre 202’s 92 mm bore with a shorter stroke.We carry 13 parts for the 173.
173 bearings
ACL and NDC main and conrod bearing sets, including an ACL Race conrod set at 0.5 mm undersize. Bearings are shared across the red six family, so most sets are boxed for the 202 and the 3.0 litre 186 (same 92 mm bore, longer stroke) as well.
173 pistons and ring sets
Two ring sets for the 173 and a one off Endurotec piston set with Hastings rings at 1.00 mm oversize. A 202 piston does not suit: the bore matches but the stroke does not. Measure the bore before you order, a fifty year old block has usually been over-bored already.
Timing gear sets
The 173 drives its camshaft by timing gears, not a chain or belt. Two NVP gear sets are listed, a straight cut set and an alloy set, both covering the whole red six family.
