Mercedes-Benz Diesel

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the benchmark commercial van in Australia, serving as everything from a courier workhorse and trade vehicle to a long-haul motorhome platform. Across its generations it has carried three core diesel engines: the long-serving OM651 2.1-litre four-cylinder, the muscular OM642 3.0-litre V6, and the current-generation OM654 2.0-litre four-cylinder fitted to the VS30 Sprinter from 2019 onward. Each has its own character, its own strengths and its own well-documented weak points, which is exactly why specialist knowledge matters when it comes to getting more from one or keeping it on the road.

At Willy’s Workshop we work on Sprinters as both a performance and a mechanical proposition. A loaded van or a heavy camper conversion places very different demands on a drivetrain than a passenger car, and a one-size-fits-all approach simply does not cut it. Whether you want sharper throttle response and stronger pulling power for towing and freight, or you are chasing down a DPF warning, an EGR fault or an AdBlue (SCR) issue, our team understands how these engines actually behave in real Australian operating conditions.

Operating from our Oxley workshop in Brisbane and our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast, we combine custom in-house ECU tuning with full diesel mechanical repair. Every tune is built to suit your specific engine, your duty cycle and your factory hardware, then dyno-verified before it leaves the building so you can see exactly what your Sprinter is producing.

Engines We Tune

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel engines we tune

OM651 2.1L 4-cyl turbo-diesel
120kW / 360Nm
Long-serving four-cylinder fitted to many Sprinters. Known for timing chain stretch, early Delphi injector issues, plus DPF and EGR carbon build-up. Rewards correct diesel-spec oil and proper maintenance.
OM642 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel
190kW / 550Nm
The torquey 3.0-litre V6 favoured for towing and heavier work. Strong and smooth, but the classic V6 weak point is injector seal seepage (‘black death’); like all these engines it runs DPF and SCR emissions equipment that needs proper diagnosis when faults appear.
OM654 2.0L 4-cyl turbo-diesel (VS30)
180kW / 500Nm
Current-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the VS30 Sprinter from 2019. Aluminium block with integrated DPF/SCR aftertreatment to meet strict Euro 6 emissions, offered in several factory power outputs.

Why choose Willy’s for your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning developed for your Sprinter’s engine and how it is actually used

  • Custom ECU tuning written in-house for the OM651, OM642 V6 and OM654, never a generic off-the-shelf file, with calibration matched to your van’s duty cycle
  • Real-world drivability gains where they matter for a working van: stronger low-to-mid range torque, smoother throttle response and easier towing and freight pulling
  • Calibration developed around your factory hardware and turbo setup, with sensible limits that respect the engine, transmission and emissions equipment
  • Every tune dyno-verified on our in-house dyno so power and torque outputs are measured and documented, not estimated

Servicing & Repair

Full diesel mechanical servicing and repair for high-kilometre commercial Sprinters

  • Logbook-style servicing, fluid and filter changes and correct diesel-spec oil to keep timing chain wear and engine longevity in check
  • DPF diagnosis, forced regeneration and cleaning, plus investigation of the frequent regeneration and blockage issues these engines are known for
  • EGR system diagnosis and carbon-related fault rectification, including the sticking valve and intake build-up common on the OM651
  • AdBlue / SCR system fault-finding, injector seal seepage (‘black death’) diagnosis, and timing chain and tensioner inspection on high-kilometre vans

FAQ

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel FAQs

Is tuning a Mercedes Sprinter worth it for a work van or camper?
For most owners, yes. A well-developed tune sharpens throttle response and lifts low-to-mid range torque, which is exactly what a loaded van, a towing rig or a heavy camper conversion benefits from. The aim for a commercial Sprinter is usable, reliable pulling power rather than chasing a peak headline figure. We tailor the calibration to how you actually use the van and dyno-verify the result so you can see the gain.
How much does Sprinter tuning or diesel repair cost?
Cost depends on the engine, the work involved and the outcome you are after, so the honest answer is that we quote each Sprinter individually. Tuning a high-kilometre OM651 with existing faults is a different job to tuning a healthy OM654, and DPF, EGR or AdBlue repairs vary widely depending on the underlying cause. Contact our Oxley or Warana workshop for a quote based on your specific van.
Will tuning affect my warranty or the emissions equipment?
Modifying the ECU on a vehicle still under factory warranty can affect that warranty, so it is worth discussing your situation with us first. On the legality side, the DPF, EGR and AdBlue/SCR systems are emissions control equipment, and removing or defeating them is not legal for road-registered vehicles. We focus on diagnosing and properly repairing those systems rather than deleting them, so your Sprinter stays compliant.
My Sprinter has DPF, EGR or AdBlue warnings. Can you fix it?
Yes, this is core work for us. The Sprinter’s OM651, OM642 and OM654 engines are all known for DPF regeneration and blockage issues, EGR carbon build-up and sticking valves, and AdBlue/SCR faults. We diagnose the actual cause rather than just clearing the light, then carry out the correct repair, cleaning or regeneration so the system works as intended and stays road-legal.
Which Sprinter engines and years do you work on?
We work across the range: the OM651 2.1-litre four-cylinder used for many years, the OM642 3.0-litre V6, and the current OM654 2.0-litre four-cylinder fitted to the VS30 Sprinter from 2019 onward. Whether yours is an earlier van or a late-model VS30, our team is familiar with the platform’s traits, common faults and tuning behaviour.
How do I book and how long will it take?
Get in touch with our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop to book your Sprinter in. A service or a straightforward tune is generally a same-day job, while diagnostic work on DPF, EGR or AdBlue faults depends on what we find once the van is on the bench. We will give you a clear timeframe when we confirm the booking.
