Jeep Wrangler JL 2.2 Diesel Tuning & Servicing

The Jeep Wrangler JL was offered in Australia with a single diesel option: the 2.2-litre MultiJet II turbo four-cylinder, producing 147kW and 450Nm and paired with the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. Available across the local JL range from 2019, it gives owners a genuine 4×4 with strong low-down torque from around 2000rpm, sensible combined-cycle economy and noticeably more refinement than the older JK 2.8 CRD. At Willy’s Workshop we know this driveline well and we treat it as the capable, hard-working platform it is.

Where the JL diesel gets a reputation for trouble is its emissions hardware. The 2.2 runs both EGR and a diesel particulate filter, and that combination does not love a life of short urban trips, stop-start traffic or constant low-speed towing. DPF regeneration that never completes, carbon-clogged EGR valves and intake-manifold soot are the issues we see most often, and because these systems interact, one neglected fault tends to cascade into the next. The good news is that the engine’s mechanical bottom end is robust; most problems come from how the car is used, not from the iron.

We service and tune Jeep Wranglers at both of our Queensland workshops: Oxley in Brisbane’s south and Warana on the Sunshine Coast. Whether you want a thorough diesel service, an emissions-system fault sorted properly the first time, or a dyno-verified custom tune that wakes up the 2.2’s mid-range for touring and towing, our team builds the work around how you actually drive your Wrangler.

Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your Jeep Wrangler

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning for the JL 2.2 MultiJet, developed and verified on our dyno rather than flashed from a generic file.

  • Custom dyno-developed tunes for the 147kW 2.2 MultiJet, targeting smoother throttle response and stronger mid-range pull for touring, sand and towing rather than peak headline numbers
  • In-house calibration of fuelling, boost and the ZF 8-speed’s shift behaviour so power is delivered cleanly through the gearbox and drivetrain
  • Every tune logged and verified on the dyno before and after, with before/after data and air-fuel and EGT monitoring so changes stay within safe limits
  • Reversible, vehicle-specific maps written for your exact Wrangler, with the factory file retained so the ECU can be returned to standard at any time

Servicing & Repair

Diesel-specialist servicing and repair for the Jeep Wrangler JL, including the EGR and DPF systems that cause most owner headaches.

  • Full logbook-style diesel servicing: oil and filters, fuel and air filtration, and a proper health check of the emissions and cooling systems
  • DPF diagnosis and forced/assisted regeneration, plus cleaning or replacement when a filter is genuinely blocked rather than just throwing parts at it
  • EGR valve and intake decarbonising to clear the hard carbon build-up that causes rough idle, limp mode and poor throttle response
  • Engine and turbo diagnostics with full fault-code scanning to resolve derate warnings and limp-mode events before they leave you stranded

FAQ

Jeep Wrangler diesel FAQs

How much does it cost to tune or service a Jeep Wrangler 2.2 diesel, and is it worth it?
Cost depends on what your Wrangler needs, so we quote after assessing the vehicle rather than giving a one-size-fits-all figure. A custom dyno tune is worth it for owners who tow, tour or do a lot of low-speed off-road work and want stronger, smoother mid-range torque. On the service side, staying on top of the DPF and EGR is well worth it given a clogged particulate filter alone can run well over $2,500 to replace if it is ignored. Contact us for a quote based on your car.
Will tuning my Wrangler void my factory warranty?
Modifications can affect warranty on driveline components, so if your JL is still within Jeep’s factory warranty period that is a conversation worth having before you commit. We keep your original factory ECU file so the vehicle can be returned to standard, and we are happy to talk through the implications for your specific situation before any work begins.
Can you delete the DPF or EGR system, and is that legal?
Removing or disabling emissions equipment such as the DPF or EGR is not legal for a registered road vehicle in Queensland, and we don’t offer it. What we do instead is fix these systems properly: assisted DPF regeneration and cleaning, plus EGR and intake decarbonising, so the factory hardware works as intended rather than being bypassed.
What gains can I realistically expect from a Wrangler 2.2 diesel tune?
The 2.2 MultiJet responds best to a tune that improves drivability rather than chasing big peak figures. Realistic outcomes are sharper throttle response and a fuller, stronger mid-range that makes a real difference towing and off-road. Because every tune is developed on our dyno for your specific vehicle, we’ll show you the actual before/after results rather than promising a number up front.
Which Wrangler engines and years do you work on?
We focus on the JL-generation Wrangler fitted with the 2.2-litre MultiJet II turbo-diesel four-cylinder (147kW/450Nm) with the ZF eight-speed auto, available in Australia from 2019. If you have a petrol JL or an older diesel Wrangler such as the JK 2.8 CRD, get in touch and we’ll let you know how we can help.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
Call or message either workshop, Oxley in Brisbane or Warana on the Sunshine Coast, and we’ll book your Wrangler in. A standard diesel service is typically a same-day job. A custom dyno tune usually needs the vehicle for the day so we can develop, verify and road-test the calibration properly, and emissions-system repairs depend on what diagnosis uncovers, which we’ll confirm with you before proceeding.
