SsangYong Diesel

SsangYong Rexton Tuning & Diesel Servicing

The SsangYong Rexton (Y400) is a body-on-frame seven-seat 4WD wagon that shares much of its underpinnings with the Musso ute, including the 2.2-litre e-XDi220 turbo-diesel four-cylinder. It is a genuine ladder-frame tow vehicle rated to 3500kg braked, which makes it popular with caravan and boat owners across South East Queensland who want seven seats without stepping up to a large American truck. At Willy’s Workshop we tune and service the Rexton at both our Oxley workshop in Brisbane and our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast.

Australian-delivered diesel Rextons run the e-XDi220 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Early cars (from the 2018 relaunch) made 133kW and 420Nm and used a Mercedes-Benz-supplied seven-speed automatic, while later models were uprated to 149kW and 441Nm and switched to an Aisin eight-speed. Like every modern Euro-compliant diesel it relies on a DPF and an EGR system, and later emissions specifications add SCR (AdBlue) to keep NOx in check. Those emissions systems are exactly where the Rexton tends to need attention once it is towing heavy or doing a lot of short suburban trips.

Because the Rexton is a value-positioned import, it responds well to a properly developed calibration rather than a generic file. Our approach is custom, in-house and dyno-verified on every vehicle, working with the factory ECU so the result is smooth, drivable and suited to how you actually use the car, whether that is daily family duty or hauling a van up the range.

Engines We Tune

SsangYong Rexton diesel engines we tune

2.2L e-XDi220 turbo-diesel (early, 7-speed auto)
133 kW / 420 Nm
2018-relaunch diesel with the Mercedes-Benz-sourced seven-speed automatic; ladder-frame 4WD rated to 3500kg braked. DPF and EGR prone to carbon and soot build-up on short suburban trips.
2.2L e-XDi220 turbo-diesel (later, Aisin 8-speed auto)
149 kW / 441 Nm
Uprated higher-output diesel with the Aisin eight-speed. Adds SCR (AdBlue) on later emissions specs; watch the timing chain tensioner and turbo on neglected oil changes.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your SsangYong Rexton

Performance Tuning

Custom in-house ECU tuning for the Rexton 2.2 e-XDi220, developed on our dyno for real towing and touring drivability.

  • Custom calibration of the factory ECU developed in-house for your specific Rexton, never an off-the-shelf generic file
  • Every tune is dyno-verified before and after so power, torque and air-fuel delivery are measured, not estimated
  • Tuning focused on stronger, flatter mid-range torque for towing the Rexton’s 3500kg braked capacity up hills and into headwinds
  • Calibration developed to keep transmission shift quality, EGT and turbo behaviour within safe, sensible limits for long engine life

Servicing & Repair

Full diesel servicing and repair for the Rexton, with particular focus on the DPF, EGR, SCR and timing chain issues these engines are known for.

  • Logbook-style servicing and quality oil and filters to protect the turbo and keep the 2.2 diesel reliable to 200,000km and beyond
  • DPF diagnosis, forced regeneration and cleaning for vehicles doing short suburban trips that never complete a passive regen
  • EGR valve and cooler cleaning or replacement to clear the carbon and oil build-up common on these engines after 60,000-90,000km
  • Timing chain, tensioner, turbo and SCR/AdBlue system inspection and repair to catch chain slap and emissions faults early

FAQ

SsangYong Rexton diesel FAQs

Is tuning a SsangYong Rexton worth it, and what does it cost?
For owners who tow or load the car regularly, a custom tune is one of the most worthwhile upgrades because the gains land in the mid-range where towing happens, not just at the top of the rev range. Cost depends on whether you want tuning alone or combined with supporting work such as a DPF clean or intake service, so we provide a written quote after we have looked at your specific Rexton. Get a quote from our Oxley or Warana workshop and we will outline exactly what is involved.
Will tuning void my SsangYong factory warranty?
SsangYong offers a long factory warranty in Australia, and any modification can affect warranty on related components. We tune the factory ECU and keep a record of the standard calibration so the vehicle can be returned to stock if needed. We will talk you through the implications for your situation before any work begins so you can make an informed decision.
Can you delete the DPF, EGR or AdBlue system on my Rexton?
Removing or disabling emissions equipment such as the DPF, EGR or SCR/AdBlue system is illegal for road-registered vehicles in Australia and we do not offer it. What we do offer is proper diagnosis, cleaning and repair of those systems so they work as intended. A correctly functioning DPF and EGR, combined with sensible driving and servicing, is the real fix for the soot and carbon problems these engines develop.
How much extra power and torque can I expect from a Rexton tune?
Gains vary with the exact engine variant, the condition of the car and how clean the DPF and EGR are, so we do not quote a fixed figure before seeing the vehicle. Every result is measured on our dyno rather than estimated, and the focus is on usable mid-range torque for towing and overtaking rather than a single headline number. We will show you the before-and-after dyno data.
Which Rexton engines and years do you tune and service?
We work across the Y400 Rexton range fitted with the 2.2-litre e-XDi220 turbo-diesel, from the earlier 133kW cars with the Mercedes-Benz-sourced seven-speed automatic through to the later 149kW/441Nm versions with the Aisin eight-speed. The same engine family appears in the related Musso ute, so if you run both we can look after the pair together.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
You can book at either our Oxley workshop in Brisbane or our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. A standard service is usually a same-day job. Custom dyno tuning typically takes most of a day because we develop and verify the calibration on the car, and emissions system work such as a DPF or EGR clean depends on condition. Contact us for a quote and we will confirm timing when you book.
