SsangYong Musso Tuning & Diesel Servicing

The SsangYong Musso (now badged KGM in newer model years) earned its following in Australia as a genuinely capable dual-cab ute that undercuts the mainstream players while still backing a 3,500kg braked towing rating on the long-tub XLV variants. Underneath sits the 2.2-litre e-XDi220 four-cylinder turbo-diesel, available with a six-speed manual or an Aisin six-speed automatic, a tried-and-tested combination that responds well to careful calibration when it is done by people who understand the platform.

Australian-delivered Mussos run a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR but, unlike many rivals, no AdBlue/SCR dosing on most variants. That keeps maintenance simpler, but it also means the DPF and EGR circuit carry the full emissions load, so carbon management and correct servicing matter a great deal on these engines, especially for utes that spend their lives doing short suburban runs and towing.

At Willy’s Workshop we tune and service the Musso in-house at our Oxley workshop in Brisbane and our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. Every tune is custom-written to your exact vehicle and dyno-verified, and we treat the Musso as the work ute it is built to be, with reliability, towing capability and long-term durability driving every decision we make.

Engines We Tune

SsangYong Musso diesel engines we tune

2.2L e-XDi220 turbo-diesel (AU-spec, manual)
133 kW / 420 Nm
DPF and EGR but no AdBlue on most AU variants; carbon and DPF management are the key reliability factors.
2.2L e-XDi220 turbo-diesel (AU-spec, Aisin 6-speed auto / XLV)
133 kW / 441 Nm
Extra torque with the automatic and long-tub XLV; rated to 3,500kg braked, so tuning prioritises towing-range response and EGT control.
2.2L e-XDi220 turbo-diesel (later higher-output)
133kW / 420Nm
A higher-output 2.2 (around 149 kW / 441 Nm) exists in some markets and later model years; AU availability varies by year, so we confirm your exact variant before tuning.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your SsangYong Musso

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house ECU tuning for the 2.2 e-XDi220, written to your vehicle and verified on the dyno.

  • Custom calibration of the factory ECU developed for the e-XDi220, never a generic off-the-shelf file, with sensible limits that respect the Aisin transmission and the 2.2-litre’s hardware.
  • Real-world focus on stronger low-down and mid-range response, the part of the rev range that actually matters when the Musso is loaded, towing near its 3,500kg braked rating or climbing.
  • Every tune is dyno-verified before it leaves us, so the power and torque figures are measured on our equipment rather than promised on paper.
  • Smoother throttle response and improved drivability around town and on the highway, tuned to keep exhaust gas temperatures and engine load in a safe, durable window.

Servicing & Repair

Full diesel mechanical servicing and repair for the Musso, from logbook work to EGR and DPF specialist attention.

  • Scheduled logbook servicing using correct-grade diesel oil and genuine-quality filters, with the Musso’s service intervals and DPF health kept front of mind.
  • EGR diagnosis, cleaning and repair to address the carbon, oil and soot build-up in the EGR valve, cooler and intake that affects most modern diesels, including SsangYong’s.
  • DPF testing, forced regeneration and cleaning for utes that run short trips and never get the highway running the filter needs to self-clean.
  • Turbo, VGT actuator, intercooler, vacuum line and fuel system diagnosis on a workshop scan tool, plus general mechanical repair, brakes, cooling and driveline.

FAQ

SsangYong Musso diesel FAQs

How much does it cost to tune a SsangYong Musso and is it worth it?
Cost depends on the work involved, so we provide a written quote once we know your model year and what you want from the vehicle. Because the tune is custom-written and dyno-verified rather than a generic file, you are paying for a result that suits how you actually use the ute. For owners who tow, carry loads or want sharper mid-range response, most find the improvement in drivability well worth it. Contact our Oxley or Warana workshop for a quote.
Will tuning my Musso void the factory warranty?
Modifying the ECU can affect the manufacturer’s position on related warranty claims, and this is something every owner should weigh up before proceeding. We are happy to talk through the considerations for your specific situation and model year so you can make an informed decision. Many of the Mussos we tune are out of the new-vehicle warranty period, but we will always be upfront with you first.
What about the DPF, EGR and AdBlue, and is tuning legal in Australia?
Most Australian-delivered Mussos run a DPF and EGR but no AdBlue/SCR system, so DPF and EGR health is the main emissions consideration on these utes. We tune within a framework that keeps your vehicle’s emissions hardware in place and functioning. Removing or defeating emissions equipment on a road-registered vehicle is not legal in Australia, so our work focuses on calibration, correct servicing and keeping the DPF and EGR working as intended.
What gains can I expect from a Musso tune?
We do not quote fixed numbers up front because every vehicle and model year is different, and we believe in measured results rather than marketing figures. Your gains are verified on our dyno before and after, and the focus is on usable low-down and mid-range torque for towing and load-carrying rather than a single headline peak figure. You will see your actual before-and-after results from our dyno.
Which Musso engines and years do you tune and service?
We work on the 2.2-litre e-XDi220 turbo-diesel that powers the Musso and Musso XLV, including the dual-cab and long-tub variants, paired with either the six-speed manual or the Aisin six-speed automatic. This covers the modern SsangYong and KGM-badged Musso range. Let us know your build year and variant and we will confirm exactly what we can do for it.
How do I book and how long does the work take?
You can book through our Oxley workshop in Brisbane or our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. A custom tune is typically a one-day job as it includes dyno time, and a logbook service is usually completed the same day. EGR, DPF or diagnostic work depends on what we find, so we will give you a clear time estimate when you book. Get in touch to lock in a date.
