GWM Diesel

GWM Cannon Tuning & Diesel Servicing

The GWM Cannon has carved out a serious slice of the Australian dual-cab market by offering a genuinely well-equipped diesel ute at a price the established players struggle to match. Under the bonnet of the Cannon sits the 2.0-litre GW4D20 four-cylinder turbo-diesel, rated at 120kW and 400Nm, driving through a ZF eight-speed automatic and rated to tow up to 3000kg braked (3500kg on some variants). It is a capable, value-focused package, but like every modern common-rail diesel it relies on a DPF and EGR system that responds well to the right tuning and servicing.

The larger Cannon Alpha steps up to a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel. Whichever Cannon you run, the factory calibration is deliberately conservative, prioritising emissions compliance and a wide operating margin over outright drivability. That leaves real, accessible improvements in throttle response, mid-range torque and towing manners once the ECU is properly recalibrated to your specific vehicle and fuel.

At Willy’s Workshop we tune and service GWM Cannon utes at both our Oxley workshop in Brisbane and our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. Every tune is custom developed in-house on our dyno, written to your specific engine and verified under load, never a generic file flashed off the shelf. Whether you want sharper everyday response, better towing composure, or simply a properly maintained driveline, we treat the Cannon as the serious work tool it has become.

Engines We Tune

GWM Cannon diesel engines we tune

2.0L GW4D20 turbo-diesel (GWM Cannon)
120 kW / 400 Nm
Four-cylinder common-rail diesel with ZF 8-speed auto and up to 3000kg braked towing (3500kg on some variants); conservative factory tune leaves real gains in throttle response and mid-range, while the DPF and EGR benefit from regular servicing on short-trip vehicles.
2.4L turbo-diesel (GWM Cannon Alpha)
120kW / 400Nm
Larger-capacity diesel fitted to the Cannon Alpha; stronger from the factory but still responds well to custom calibration, with DPF regen and EGR carbon build-up the key maintenance points. Confirm exact AU output by build year and variant.
Tuning & Servicing

Why choose Willy’s for your GWM Cannon

Performance Tuning

Custom in-house ECU tuning for the turbo-diesel GWM Cannon and Cannon Alpha, developed and verified on our dyno.

  • Custom remap of the factory ECU calibration tailored to your GW4D20 2.0L (120kW/400Nm) Cannon or 2.4L Cannon Alpha, never a generic off-the-shelf file.
  • Sharper throttle response and a stronger, smoother mid-range to address the soft, hesitant feel many owners notice off idle and when the eight-speed auto is loaded up.
  • Towing-focused calibration that builds usable torque earlier in the rev range for steadier towing within your Cannon’s rated limit and reduced gear hunting on hills.
  • Every tune is dyno-verified under load before it leaves us, with before-and-after results so you can see exactly what your Cannon gained.

Servicing & Repair

Full diesel servicing and repair for the GWM Cannon and Cannon Alpha at our Oxley and Warana workshops.

  • Logbook-style scheduled servicing using quality oils and filters, keeping your Cannon’s service history intact for warranty purposes.
  • DPF diagnosis, forced regeneration and cleaning to resolve the soot build-up and incomplete regens common on Cannons used mainly for short or city trips.
  • EGR and intake inspection and decarbonising to address the carbon build-up that progressively chokes airflow and dulls response on these engines.
  • Diagnostics and repair for common Cannon issues including intercooler pipe splits, oil leaks, engine mounts and turbo and fuel-system concerns.

FAQ

GWM Cannon diesel FAQs

Is tuning a GWM Cannon worth it, and what does it cost?
For most owners, yes. The factory tune is conservative, so a custom remap delivers a noticeably sharper, more responsive ute that tows and drives better day to day. Cost depends on your engine, the goals you have and any supporting work, so we provide a firm quote up front once we know your exact variant. Get a quote and we’ll talk you through the options for your Cannon.
Will tuning affect my GWM factory warranty?
Modifying the ECU can affect aspects of your factory warranty, and that is a decision only you can make. We’re upfront about this rather than glossing over it. Many owners proceed once they understand the trade-offs, and we always keep your servicing to a high standard so the mechanical side of the vehicle is well cared for. We’re happy to discuss your situation before you commit.
Can you delete the DPF, EGR or AdBlue system, and is that legal?
Removing or disabling emissions equipment such as the DPF, EGR or any SCR/AdBlue system is illegal for road-registered vehicles in Australia and we don’t offer it. What we do offer is proper diagnosis, cleaning, forced regeneration and EGR servicing to get these systems working as they should, which is the durable fix for the soot and carbon issues Cannons are prone to.
What gains can I expect from a Cannon tune?
Gains vary with the engine, condition and fuel, so we don’t quote fixed numbers before seeing your vehicle. What we can promise is a calibration developed and dyno-verified specifically for your Cannon, with measurable, repeatable results you can see on our before-and-after dyno sheets. The most valued improvement for most owners is the everyday drivability and towing composure rather than a headline figure alone.
Which Cannon engines and models do you tune and service?
We work on the Cannon with the 2.0-litre GW4D20 turbo-diesel (120kW/400Nm) and the Cannon Alpha with its 2.4-litre turbo-diesel. If you’re unsure which engine and model year you have, tell us your build details or VIN and we’ll confirm exactly what we can do for your vehicle.
How do I book, and how long does it take?
You can book at either our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop. A standard service is typically a same-day job, while a custom dyno tune is usually allocated a full day so we can develop and verify the calibration properly. Book a service or get a quote and we’ll lock in a time that suits you.
