Toyota Diesel

Toyota Diesel Performance Tuning & Servicing

Toyota builds the diesels that move Australia. From the 1GD-FTV 2.8L HiLux that fills every trade carpark to the F33A-FTV twin-turbo V6 in the LandCruiser 300, these engines are tough, capable and almost universally driven harder than the brochure ever suggested. At Willy’s Workshop we work on the full Toyota diesel range every day across our Oxley (Brisbane) and Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshops, and we know exactly where the factory left performance, drivability and reliability on the table.

Toyota’s diesels are deliberately conservative from the factory. The 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV run a variable-nozzle turbo, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a fifth injector for regeneration; the twin-turbo V8 1VD-FTV in the 200 Series and the newer twin-turbo V6 F33A-FTV carry far more headroom than their factory numbers show. That conservatism is great for fleet warranty figures, but it leaves real, usable gains in throttle response, towing torque and fuel economy that a properly developed tune unlocks without abusing the hardware.

Just as importantly, the Toyota diesel range has a handful of well-documented Australian-specific quirks: the 1GD ‘dust’ saga that corrupts the MAF sensor, DPF blockages on stop-start city HiLuxes and Prados, injector-seal oil dilution and carbon build-up across the EGR circuit. We tune AND mechanically service these engines, so we see the whole picture rather than just chasing a dyno number. Every Toyota that leaves our workshop is set up to perform and to keep performing.

2GD-FTV 2.4L
110kW / 400Nm
Smaller-capacity GD four in the HiLux; shares the DPF and regen traits.
1KD-FTV 3.0L
126kW / 343Nm
Older HiLux/Prado (KUN/120-150 Series); pre-DPF D-4D, injector and carbon focus.
F33A-FTV 3.3L V6
227kW / 700Nm
LandCruiser 300; twin-turbo V6 with strong tuning headroom.
1VD-FTV 4.5L V8
200kW / 650Nm
LandCruiser 200 twin-turbo V8 (70 Series is single-turbo ~151kW/430Nm).
1HD-FTE 4.2L
150kW / 430Nm
LandCruiser 100 six-cylinder; classic, durable touring engine.

Why choose Willy’s for your Toyota

Performance Tuning

Custom, in-house Toyota diesel tuning developed and dyno-verified on our own equipment, written to your exact engine, fuel and driving conditions, never a generic off-the-shelf file.

  • Custom factory-ECU remapping for the 1GD-FTV, 2GD-FTV, 1KD-FTV, V8 1VD-FTV and V6 F33A-FTV, tailored to your build, fuel quality and whether you tow, tour or work the vehicle
  • Every tune is dyno-verified before it leaves the workshop, with before-and-after runs so the gains in power, torque and throttle response are measured rather than guessed
  • Towing and touring focused calibrations that lift mid-range torque where it matters for a loaded HiLux, Prado or LandCruiser, while keeping exhaust gas temps and engine load in safe limits
  • Supporting upgrades done properly in-house, including intercoolers, exhausts, turbo and injector work, so the tune is matched to the hardware rather than fighting it

Servicing & Repair

A full diesel mechanical workshop that knows the Toyota range inside out, from routine logbook servicing to the specific faults that plague these engines in Australian conditions.

  • Logbook and major servicing for the entire Toyota diesel range, using correct-spec oils and filters to protect the DPF, turbo and injection system
  • DPF diagnosis, forced regeneration, cleaning and replacement for blocked HiLux, Prado and Fortuner 2.8L engines, plus EGR cleaning and carbon removal
  • Repair of the known Australian fault patterns, including the 1GD airbox-dust and MAF sensor issue, injector-seal oil dilution and fifth-injector problems
  • Injection diagnosis, turbo, timing (chain, belt or gear-drive), cooling and driveline repairs on HiLux, LandCruiser 300/200/100/70 Series, Prado, Fortuner and HiAce

FAQ

Toyota diesel FAQs

Is tuning my Toyota diesel worth the money?
For most owners, yes. Toyota’s diesels are tuned conservatively from the factory, so a custom dyno-developed tune typically delivers a noticeable lift in mid-range torque, smoother throttle response and, when driven sensibly, improved fuel economy. The real value shows up when you tow or carry weight, where the standard calibration feels lazy. We discuss your goals and budget before any work and give you a clear quote, so book a chat with the team to see what your specific engine and build will gain.
Will tuning void my Toyota warranty?
Any modification can affect a manufacturer warranty, and we will always be upfront about that. Our tuning is custom written and reversible, and we are happy to talk through the implications for your particular vehicle, its age and whether it is still in the factory warranty period. Many of our customers are out of warranty or running older 1KD, 1VD or 100 Series engines where this is not a concern at all. Have a conversation with us first so you can make an informed decision.
Can you fix or delete my DPF, EGR or AdBlue, and is it legal?
We service DPF and EGR systems thoroughly: diagnosis, forced regeneration, cleaning, EGR carbon removal and replacement where needed. On emissions hardware, removal or defeat of factory pollution-control equipment on a road-registered vehicle is not legal in Australia, so we focus on getting these systems working correctly rather than deleting them. If your HiLux or Prado has a chronically blocked DPF, we will find out why, often it is a regeneration or driving-pattern issue, and put it right properly.
How much extra power and torque can I expect?
It depends entirely on the engine and the supporting hardware, which is exactly why we dyno-verify every tune rather than promising a fixed figure. A 1GD-FTV 2.8L responds very differently to a twin-turbo F33A-FTV V6 or a V8 1VD-FTV. We measure your vehicle’s baseline on our dyno, develop the calibration to suit, and show you the real before-and-after numbers. We would rather give you accurate, repeatable gains your engine will live with than quote an inflated headline figure.
Which Toyota diesel engines and years do you work on?
The full modern Toyota diesel range. That includes the 1GD-FTV 2.8L and 2GD-FTV 2.4L in current HiLux, Prado and Fortuner; the older 1KD-FTV 3.0L; the F33A-FTV 3.3L twin-turbo V6 in the LandCruiser 300; the 1VD-FTV 4.5L V8 in the 200 and 70 Series; and the 1HD-FTE 4.2L in the 100 Series. We also cover the HiAce. If you are unsure which engine you have, give us your model and build year and we will confirm.
How do I book, and how long does the work take?
Booking is easy, contact our Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshop and we will find a time that suits. A custom tune including baseline and verification dyno runs is generally a same-day job, while servicing and diagnostic work depends on what we find. DPF, injector or turbo repairs can take longer if parts are required, and we will always give you a realistic timeframe and a quote before we start.
