Diesel Workshop FAQs

Got questions about diesel tuning, servicing, repairs or truck work? Here are some of the most common questions we get at Willy’s Workshop. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch with the team and we’ll help you out.

General Questions

Q: What vehicles do you work on?

A: We service and tune virtually every diesel on Australian roads and worksites. That covers daily-driver utes and 4WDs like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara and Patrol, through to 79 Series LandCruisers, touring and towing setups, vans, and heavier trucks and Dodge Ram or Cummins American rigs. Whether it is a common-rail injector or fuel-pump replacement, a DPF, EGR or AdBlue fault, a performance ECU remap, a logbook service or a full engine rebuild, our Australian-based diesel specialists have the diagnostic gear and dyno to do the job properly. The focus is always practical reliability and usable performance for how you actually use the vehicle, not numbers for the sake of it. Not sure we cover your model? Send your rego or VIN and we will confirm exactly what we can do before you book. Two workshops: Oxley in Brisbane and Warana on the Sunshine Coast.

Q: Do you only work on diesel vehicles?

A: Yes. Diesel is all we do, and that focus is deliberate. We are not trying to be everything to everyone, so when you bring your vehicle to Willys Workshop you are dealing with a team that lives and breathes diesel servicing, repairs, diagnostics, tuning and upgrades day in, day out. Common-rail injection, high-pressure pumps, turbochargers, DPF, EGR and AdBlue emissions systems, ECU remapping and full engine rebuilds are our bread and butter across makes like Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Isuzu and Nissan and the heavier Cummins and American trucks. That specialisation means faster, more accurate diagnostics and repairs done right the first time, because we see the same platforms and the same faults constantly. If you have a petrol vehicle we are not the right fit, but for anything diesel, from a daily ute to a fleet truck, we have you covered at both our Oxley and Warana workshops.

Q: Where is Willy’s Workshop located?

Willy’s Workshop services customers across the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. If you’re not sure which location suits you best, get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Diesel Tuning

Q: Is diesel tuning safe for my vehicle?

A: Done properly, yes. A good diesel tune should make the vehicle drive better without compromising how it is meant to be used. The key is matching the tune to the specific vehicle, its hardware and what you actually do with it, whether that is towing a caravan, touring off-road or the daily commute. We tune on a dyno and read live data rather than loading a generic file, so the result suits your engine, transmission and cooling setup. We deliberately stay within safe, reliable limits rather than chasing headline numbers, because a tune that stresses the driveline is no good to anyone. The aim is stronger torque where you use it, smoother power delivery and often better economy under load, all while protecting longevity. If you are unsure whether tuning suits your Hilux, Ranger, Navara, D-Max or LandCruiser, talk to us about your goals first and we will give you a straight answer.

Q: Can you tune for towing?

A: Absolutely, and it is one of the most common reasons people come to us. A well-matched towing tune improves how the vehicle pulls under load, sharpening throttle response, building usable low-down torque and smoothing out the power delivery so you are not constantly hunting for gears with a van or trailer behind you. Just as important, the right tune can help manage exhaust gas temperatures and keep things in a safe, reliable window when the vehicle is working hard on hills and in the heat. We set towing tunes up on the dyno around your real-world setup, whether that is a caravan, a boat, a trailer or a loaded tray, and we factor in any other modifications like exhaust or intake upgrades. The result is a vehicle that tows with less stress on the driver and the driveline. Tell us your tow weight and vehicle and we will tailor it.

Q: Will tuning affect reliability?

A: A good tune from a proper diesel workshop should support reliability, not work against it. We focus on real-world drivability and a setup that suits the vehicle, rather than chasing big numbers that put the engine, turbo and transmission under unnecessary stress. That means tuning on the dyno, watching live data, and staying within safe limits for fuelling, boost and exhaust gas temperatures so the vehicle stays dependable for towing, touring and daily driving. In practice, a well-judged tune often improves how the vehicle behaves under load and can ease the workload on driveline components compared with a poorly matched factory calibration. We would rather leave a little performance on the table than turn your diesel into a hand grenade. If reliability is your priority, tell us, and we will build a conservative, sensible tune around how you actually use the vehicle at either our Oxley or Warana workshop.

Servicing and Repairs

Q: Do you service diesel 4WDs and trucks?

A: Yes — diesel 4WDs and light trucks are a big part of what we do at both workshops. We service and repair the popular touring and work platforms: HiLux, Ranger, Navara, D-Max, BT-50, Triton, Patrol, and the LandCruiser 79, 200 and 300 Series, plus Prado and light commercials that earn their keep towing and carrying. Whether it is a weekend tourer loaded for the high country, a sand-driven coast 4×4, or a tradie ute doing hard kilometres, we handle servicing, diagnostics, injector and pump work, DPF and emissions repairs, turbo and cooling jobs, and performance tuning matched to how the vehicle is actually used. We see plenty of heavily-accessorised 4WDs — bars, drawers, long-range tanks, a van on the back — so we service and tune with that real-world load in mind. Book your 4WD or truck in at Oxley (Brisbane) or Warana (Sunshine Coast).
Q: Can you diagnose fault codes and performance issues?

A: Yes, and it is one of our strengths. If your diesel is down on power, throwing fault codes, dropping into limp mode, blowing smoke or just not driving the way it should, we use proper diagnostic equipment and live data to work out what is actually causing it rather than guessing. Modern common-rail diesels are complex, so a warning light can point to anything from a sensor or wiring fault to an injector, turbo, EGR or DPF problem, and the trick is isolating the real root cause before any parts go on. We read fault codes, test components, check live values under load and, where needed, put the vehicle on the dyno. You get a clear explanation of what is wrong, what it will take to fix, and the likely cost before we proceed. If something feels off with your vehicle, book a diagnostic at Oxley or Warana and we will get to the bottom of it.

Q: Do you work on DPF, turbo and injector problems?

A: Yes, these are everyday work for us. Blocked or faulting DPFs, turbo issues like overboost, underboost or failed actuators, and injector problems such as rough running, hard starting, smoke or knocking are some of the most common diesel faults we see, and we have the tools and experience to diagnose and repair them properly. We test and service injectors and high-pressure pumps, supply genuine Bosch, Denso and Continental parts for makes like the Hilux, Ranger, BT-50, D-Max and Navara, and carry out turbo and emissions-system repairs across light 4WDs through to heavy trucks. Just as important, we find the underlying cause, because a blocked DPF or a dead injector is often a symptom of something else. If your vehicle is showing any of these signs, bring it in and we will inspect it, explain what is happening and recommend the best next step. Both Oxley and Warana are set up for this work.

Trucks and Commercial

Q: Do you work on larger trucks?

A: Yes. Willys Workshop is set up to work on larger diesel vehicles as well as 4WDs and utes. We have the equipment, the space and the diesel experience to service and repair trucks, including American heavy-duty rigs and Cummins and Dodge Ram platforms, alongside light commercials and work vehicles. That covers routine servicing, fault diagnosis, injector and pump work, turbo and emissions repairs, and performance tuning suited to how the truck earns its keep. Downtime costs money on a working truck, so the priority is accurate diagnostics and getting the job done right the first time to keep you on the road. Whether it is a single truck or part of a fleet, get in touch with the details, make, model, engine and what it needs, and we will talk through the work and arrange a time. We handle heavier diesel work from both our Oxley (Brisbane) and Warana (Sunshine Coast) workshops.

Q: Do you service fleets or commercial vehicles?

A: Yes. We work with commercial operators and fleet managers who need dependable, no-fuss servicing and repair support to keep their vehicles earning. The focus is always on minimising downtime, keeping vehicles safe and compliant, and making sure the work suits how those vehicles are actually used, whether that is a couple of work utes, a run of delivery vans or a fleet of trucks. We can handle scheduled servicing, logbook maintenance, diagnostics, injector and pump work, emissions and DPF repairs, and performance or economy tuning where it makes sense for a working fleet. Consistent, proactive maintenance from a diesel specialist means fewer breakdowns and lower running costs over the life of the vehicle. We can work around your operating schedule to keep disruption to a minimum. If you run commercial diesels around Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast, get in touch and we will put together a servicing approach that suits your fleet and your budget.

Booking and Process

Q: Do I need to book in advance?

A: Yes, we recommend booking ahead wherever you can. Diesel diagnostics, injector and pump work, tuning and bigger repair jobs all take time to do properly, and booking in advance lets us set aside the right amount of time and have the right parts and equipment ready for your vehicle. It also means a smoother run for you, with less waiting and a clear plan for the work. We do understand that breakdowns and urgent issues do not wait, so if something has gone wrong and you need help quickly, get in touch and we will do our best to fit you in as soon as we can at either Oxley or Warana. For routine servicing, tuning and planned repairs, the earlier you book the easier it is to lock in a time that suits you. Reach out with your vehicle details and what you need and we will arrange a booking.

Q: How do I book in?

A: Booking in is easy. You can get in touch through the website, give us a call, or send an enquiry with your vehicle details and a quick description of what you need help with. The more you can tell us up front, make, model, engine, year and the symptoms or service you are after, the better we can prepare. From there we will point you toward the right service, give you an idea of what is involved, and arrange a booking time that suits you at either our Oxley workshop in Brisbane or our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast. If you are not sure exactly what the vehicle needs, that is fine, just describe what is going on and we will help you work it out. For diagnostic and repair work we may ask a few questions first so we can allow the right time. Reach out whenever suits and we will take it from there.

Q: Do you provide quotes before starting work?

A: Yes. We aim to be upfront about the work required and the likely costs before we get started, so you are never left guessing. For straightforward jobs like servicing or a known repair, we can give you a clear quote in advance. For faults and performance problems, the honest answer is that we often need to diagnose the vehicle first to know exactly what is going on, because guessing leads to wasted money on the wrong parts. In those cases we will explain the diagnostic step and its cost before we proceed, then come back to you with what we have found and what it will take to put it right before any major work goes ahead. That way you stay in control of the spend and there are no surprises. If you would like an idea of cost for a particular job, get in touch with your vehicle details and we will help.

Q: Can you inspect my vehicle before I buy it?

A: Yes. A pre-purchase inspection is one of the smartest things you can do before committing to a used diesel, and it is work we are happy to carry out. Diesels can hide expensive problems, worn injectors, a tired turbo, DPF or emissions issues, or the early signs of a bigger mechanical fault, that are not obvious on a test drive. We go over the vehicle with proper diagnostic equipment, check for fault codes and live data, assess the engine, driveline and key wear items, and give you a clear, honest picture of its condition and anything to be aware of. That information puts you in a much stronger position, whether it helps you negotiate, walk away, or buy with confidence. If you have found a diesel ute, 4WD, truck or tourer you are considering, book a pre-purchase inspection at Oxley or Warana before you hand over any money.
