Shocks control the spring. Worn ones let the vehicle float over dips and the nose dive under brakes, and they’ll scallop your tyres. Look for oil weeping down the shock body. Most 4WD shocks are gutless somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000km, sooner if the ute carries weight all the time.
Foam cell is the one for long corrugated roads, it won’t fade the way a standard hydraulic does. Adjustable costs more and earns it if your load changes week to week. If the vehicle never leaves the black top, standard is fine and you don’t need to spend up.
Something we see a lot: a heavy duty shock bolted to a tired standard spring. That won’t fix a sagging rear. If you’re carrying weight the spring rate has to come up too, so ask us and we’ll quote the pair.

How do I know my shocks are worn?

Look for oil weeping down the shock body, a floaty ride at highway speed, the nose diving under brakes, or cupped and scalloped tyre wear. Most 4WD shocks are gutless somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000km, sooner if the ute carries weight all the time. We can put it on the hoist at Oxley or Warana and tell you.

Foam cell or standard shocks?

Foam cell handles long corrugated roads without fading out. A standard hydraulic heats up and loses damping on that sort of road. If you tour or run dirt regularly, foam cell earns the money. If the vehicle stays on the black top, standard is fine.

Do I need springs as well as shocks?
